Jim Cline
Carol Dean Balding was born September 18, 1927, to John Lester and Carrie Louella
(Springer) Balding, six miles east of Medicine Lodge. She was fourth of nine children,
Ruth Bower, Keith, Richard, Carol Cline, Cora Lou Templeton, James, twins Jean and
Jerry, and Gary. Jerry died in infancy.
Carol attended Walstead school three years, then fourth through high school in
Medicine Lodge, graduating in 1945. She united with the Christian Church June 8, 1975.
Carol's parents had black mare "Old Molly" who was very special to all the children.
Carol attended the first Indian Peace Treaty Pageant in a laundry basket. She has
a souvenir program from that pageant.
James Dean Cline was born July 1, 1927, to Clarence Wesley and Beulah (McGavin)
Cline near Deerhead, Kansas, on the Gentry Estate. Jim was the third of four children,
Bill, Wesley, Jim and Alice (Snyder) Gerstner.
He attended Deerhead School through eighth grade and graduated from MLHS in 1945.
He played football and was on the track team. Jim is a member of the Methodist Church.
Carol and Jim were married July 30, 1945. Jim entered the Army Medical Corps shortly
after marriage. Before he was to leave for overseas duty from California, orders were
changed. He was sent to Ft. Lewis, Washington. Carol joined him, leaving their baby
son, James Clarence, with their parents. Carol returned home, and Jim was discharged
the following summer. They returned to the Gentry Estate. Jim's birthplace. His parents
had moved to Medicine Lodge, where they bought a home at 802 N. Walnut.
Jim and Carol had five children, James Clarence, David Lynn, Beverly Dean, Carolyn
Jean, and Jerry Lee (Feb. 17, 1952-Feb 22, 1952).
They ranched several years and in 1959 bought a summer resort near Gunnison, Colorado,
on the Gunnison River. The children attended Deerhead School, the term ended in May, and
the Clines opened their resort. They operated it till near Labor Day and returned so
the children could attend school in the fall.
Cline's Resort was sold in 1963, but they retained the back half of the land where
they platted a subdivision of homesites. All but two were sold, where they had a cabin
for their own use. In spring, 1979, they sold it. A nearly completed large two story
log house on one of the lots sold just before completion.
Jim helped build Medicine Lodge Rural High School in 1960 and the new Trice building
at Kansas and Main. He then worked for Dickey Appliance.
Jim took lessons and received his Pilot's license January 15, 1966, bought a J-3 Cub
plane which he used to hunt coytes, along with guys with their greyhounds.
In 1960 Jimmy and Dave started to MLHS, Beverly and Jean still attended Deerhead
school. In the fall of 1961 they bought a home in Medicine Lodge, 502 Jefferson. Carol
worked part time at DeWeese Hardwar and Hibbard's Rexall.
Jim's Dad, "Skeet", passed away February 2, 1968, at the age of 65 of emphysema.
Jim bought his mother's ranching interest, and he and his brother, Wesley, leased the
ranch from their mother, forming Cline Brother's Ranch.
In March, 1974, Jim and Wesley bought the Elmore Ranch; it joins the Gentry Estate.
It has thousands of cedar trees, and in December, 1978, they formed Cline's Cedar
Lumber Company, with a Belwaw Saw mill, started operating and selling cedar lumber,
along with ranching activities.
Jimmy married Dawn Miller and had one son, James Skeet, 8-5-1968. He is divorced and
lives in Pasco, Washington.
Dave married Delores Shelhammer and had one son, Shawn David 4-16-1971, was divorced
and later married Amber Garten. They have a son, David Wesley, 4-11-1976, and a daughter,
Keri Lynn, 3-25-1977. They work on the ranch and live in the ranch house where Dave
grew up.
Beverly graduated from Ft. Hays and married Bill Bray. Several years later they were
divorced. She worked for Governor Docking, then in the State House Research and Planning.
She is now working at KU and lives in Lawrence.
Jean married Charlie Traffas, their children are Michael Shane, 9-28-1969, Daniel Wade,
9-9-1970, Genae Rochelle, 8-15-1974, and Dustin Lynn, 11-25-1975. They live near Sedgwick,
Kansas, where the children attend school. Charlie is sales manager for KFDI Radio in
Wichita.
