Homer Howell Cohoe

Homer Howell Cohoe, the only child of Doctor Winslow Cohoe and Jennie Howell, was born in Harristown,
Illinois. Homer's father, Doctor, was attached to company E of the 92nd Illinois infantry during the
Civil War and is buried in the Gerlane Cemetery. Homer's mother, Jennie Hicks, moved to Barber County in
1928 and located in the town of Hazelton until her death in 1950.
Homer and Edna Amelia Wormser were married on March 15, 1903, in NOrtonville, Kansas. They had four
children: Melvin Howard, Dorothy Ethel, Claude Earnest, and Ethel Lucille.
In 1911 our family moved to Barber county and located southwest of Gerlane, then we moved two and
a half miles northwest of Kiowa. Melvin, Dorothy, and I attended the Union Country School. I remember
the teacher rode his bicycle from Kiowa to the school and back each day, which was approximatel four miles.
In 1917 my father, Homer, bought a farm from the original homesteader, Perry Ward. The farm is located
three miles northwest of Kiowa. We attended the Fairview County School, located north of our home, until
we completed the seventh grade, then continued our educations at Kiowa High. I was a member of the Kiowa
football team from 1925 to 1929. The team was undefeated all four years except for one game.
The family built a new home on the farm in 1926. During the process of tearing down the old house and
rebuilding, our parents and sisters lived in the garage and wash house, while Melvin and I spept in the
  barn.
Dad was a member of the Co-op board in 1929. He was a farmer and raised cattle and chickens.
All the children of HOmer and Edna settled in Barber County. Melvin attended the State Agricultural
College in Manhattan one year. He married Margaret Dacy and to this union one child was born, Jeannine
Ann (Mrs. Bill Fullerton), who resides in Tempe, Arizona. Melvin passed away in 1938. Margaret lives in
  Kiowa.
Dorothy married Otho Bryant. They had one son, Donald Duane, who married Mildred Willig. Duane lives
in Oklahoma southeast of Kiowa. Dorothy died in 1929.
I married Inez Roberts, and we established our homeon a farm southeast of Hazelton. in 1948 we moved
to the homeplace. We had three children: Monte who resides in Anthony; Beverly, who married Bert Gillig,
resides on the home place; and Claudia, who married Dean Beason, resides in Washington, Illinois. In 1969
we built a new home east of Kiowa. Inez passed away in 1972. Idris Pfaff Fausett and I were married in
  1973.
Ethel married Ray Knorp. They also had three children: Verna, who married Dick Parsons, lives in
Carrollton, TExas; Darryl, who married Judy Hall, resides near Hastings, Michigan; and Cheryl, who married
Mike Miller, lives in Kansas City.
