George Washington Colborn
George was the eldest of 12 children born to Frank and Alice (Fleisher) Colborn, February 22, 1882,
in Shawnee County, Kansas, near Hoyt. His parents moved to Barber County in 1884 to a homestead seven
miles southeast of Medicine Lodge. George attended College Hill School. He also attended a school in
Fort Scott. While attending school he met Euella Fife from Amity, Missouri, who was also a student.
Euella was raised by foster parents, Nick Keesman, near Amity.
George and Euella were married in 1905. They moved to Barber County, where they lived on the west
Boggs place in the Union Chapel community in Eagle Township. They lived there for 3 1/2 years, during
which time one child, Pansy, was born. They purchased a farm from Pete McGerry about seven miles south
of Medicine Lodge in 1909. Three more girls, Louise - 1910, Thelma - 1911, and Mary - 1918, were born
in this home.
George loved horses and mules. He raised and broke horses and mules to the harness. He often sold
spans of mules in the area. The girls drove green broke teams in the fields to help finish their
training. George also raised sheep, wheat, and hay crops. A wonderful dog, Jip, was a real friend and
help. The all-girl family became farm hands. They shucked corn, made hay, scooped wheat, helped with
tractors when they came along. The girls all attended school at District #34; they walked 2 1/2 miles
to school.
Euella was a semi-invalid for many years, but a wonderful cook and dressmaker. She did all kinds of
beautiful handwork. She passed away in June, 1933, after years of illness.
In August, 1933, Louise married Bert McGuire in Medicine Lodge. In November, 1933, Thelma married
Raymond Hull in her father's home. Mary Elizabeth was married to Earl Duggins in 1936. Pansy continued
to keep house for her father. In 1939 Pansy married Lana Lichlyter of Sharon. They had three boys -
Otis, Orie, and Larry - and one girl, Mildred. Pansy passed away in 1956 and is buried in Attica
Cemetery.
In 1942 George married his widowed sister-in-law, Madge Bayliffe Colborn. They had one son, John.
George was a serious student of the Bible and gave much time and effort to church work. He passed away
January, 1969, and was buried beside Euella in the Highland Cemetery in Medicine Lodge.
