Elmer Conner
Elmer William Conner was born September 24, 1906, the youngest in a family of
eight born to A.J. (Andy) and Maidie De Armond Conner. Elmer was born when the
family lived for a time in a sod house near Mule Creek in Eagle Township. In
addition to caring for her own family, Elmer's mother was widely known for her
nursing skills, frequently going many miles helping care for a sick neighbor or
attending the birth of a new baby.
When Elmer started to school, the family had moved to a school quarter south
and east of the Elsea ranch. Much of the time he walked the three miles with
his brothers and sisters to the Lockert School, where Everett Scheel was his
teacher. After a few years, the family moved to the Kenney farm which is now the
home of Jim and Allison Hendrix. While living here, he graduated from the eighth
grade at old Lasswell (Eagle) School and worked for farmers and ranchers in the
neighborhood.
In September of 1923 a new teacher came to Eagle School. She was Violet
Davis, who had graduated the previous spring from the Medicine Lodge High School,
which was then called Barber County High school. On passing the State Normal
Training Examination, she was granted a State Teaching Certificate. She continued
her 'education', teaching fifteen children ranging from beginners to eighth graders.
Soon the youngsters began to notice and call to the teacher's attendtion how
often a certain Model T Ford made flying trips past the schoolhouse. Neighborhood
gatherings and an occasional barn dance contributed to social enjoyments. January
26, 1925 was a snowy day, Elmer and Violet were married in the home of her parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Lincoln davis. Their first home was on the Frank Storm ranch, which
Elmer and his brother, Wilse, had rented. Later that year Elmer was employed by
Best Brothers Keene Cement Company in Medicine Lodge.
Their son, Eugene, was born January 25, 1926, and four years later, December 1,
1929, their daughter, Maida Anne. Depression years and Dust Bowl days brought many
experiences to this young family. Twins, Esther and Chester, were born September 1,
1937. Elmer was employed as Field Superintendent by Olson Oil Company of Tulsa,
and the family moved to a lease house north of town. Eugene joined the Navy during
World War II, and Violet returned to teaching in 1952. Olson Oil Company set up a
water flood operation at Cushing, Oklahoma, and Elmer spent several years in charge
of production and drilling there.
Medicine Lodge and Barber County have been HOME to this family for many years.
They have three living children, fourteen grandchildren, and sixteen great grand-
children. The Conners are active members of the United Methodist Church. Violet
has continuous member ship of sixty-five years and considers it a great privilege
that she has seen several of her great-grandchildren baptized into this church.
