Vestal Lee Cook, Jr.
Vestal Cook, Jr., son of Vestal and Frances Axline Cook, was born on the ranch
which is located about 5 1/2 miles north of Hardtner on September 11, 1917. Lt.jg
Cook returned to his home in late fall, 1945, after serving as a Navy pilot during
WWII. He divided his next few years between Kansas and Colorado, buying a ranch at
Chromo, Colorado, in September 1949. On November 28, 1949, he married Gayle Lasley
of Hardtner, who had served as a Marine Mess Sergeant during the war. Gayle was an
Iowa native. The first child, June Charlene, was born October 17, 1951, and in
September of 1952 the Cooks sold out and returned to operate the home ranch in
partnership with his father. More land was added, making a total of just under 4,000
acres. On April 19, 1954, a second daughter, Mollie Maureen, was born prematurely
at the Achenbach Hospital in Hardtner. A 5 1/2 months baby, she weight 25 ounces,
and the late Dr. Hiroshi Yasuda made medical history with her survival and fine
progress. John Vestal was born on November 9, 1956, and is presently ranching with
his parents. His grandmother, Frances Cook, holds an interest in the land which
John leases from her.
June graduated from Ft. Hays State University and is listed in Who's Who in
American Colleges and Universities, 1973 edition. She pledged Sigma Sigma Sigma
Sorority and also served as cheerleader. She took her Masters's in educational
media from UNC in 1978, after three years of teaching special education in Manhattan
Jr. High. In June 1978, she married Davydd G. Morris of Fort Collins, Colorado,
and lives there now. Mollie graduated from Ft. Hays State U. in 1976 with a degree
in commercial art. She pledged Sigma Sigma Sigma, served as a cheerleader. She
works for an advertising firm in Wichita. John attended Northwestern in Alva his
Freshman year, transferring to Kansas State University for two more years, majoring
in Animal Science. He pledged Kappa Sigma fraternity. John is athletically inclined
and participates in seasonal sports. John and his Dad are Shriners, the girls past
Worthy Advisors in Rainbow, Gayle an Eastern Star.
The Cooks are interested in good cattle and conversation, as were Vestal's
father and grandfather before him. Vestal is a director of the Kansas Livestock
Association. Gayle is a past president of the Kansas CowBelles and a regional
chairman of American National CowBelles.
