Jesse Cushenbery
My parents were Jesse and Lillian Cushenbery; they came from pioneer
families in Barber County. Jesse Clyde Cushenbery and Lillian May Schloetzer
were married August 10, 1916, in her parents' house in Sharon. Her parents
were Dr. F.L. and Anna Schloetzer (the former Anna Matis).
They came to Sharon in 1900 with the local veterinarian, also known for
his beautiful penmanship. Many times he was called on to write announcements
for weddings or graduations.
My grandma Schloetzer came from Prussia as a child. My granddad Schloetzer
was from Wooster, Ohio. They lived in Oklahoma before coming to Sharon. My
mother was born in a tent in Oklahoma, April 15, 1895; she died in 1971.
My parents raised four children in Barber County: Mildred, Ivan, Donald,
and Wilbur. Ivan gave his live for his country in WWII. He was shot down
over Hamburg, Germany, and his body was never found.
My dad's parents were Charlie and Mary Cushenbery, who raised 12 children
four miels southeast of Sharon. Grandma Cushenbery was Mary Huddleston, born
January 14, 1853 in Marydosia, Illinois. Granddad Cushenbery was born December
18, 1852, in Scottsville, Kentucky. They were rearing their young family in
Coffeyville, Kansas, when they were urged by his brother, a medical doctor in
Medicine Lodge, to come to Barber County. They loaded their belongings on a
railroad car - children, furniture, wagon team of horses, etc. - and pioneered
to Barber County. Grandpa bought a few acres and with much hard work and
determiniation, added acres to it as he could. At one time he traded a span
of mules for 40 acres. When he died he had 320 acres.
Their children got their education at Enon School. They attended the Baptist
Church three-fourths miles north of the farm. Of the 12 children they raised
in Sharon Valley only one is living, she is Mabel Demint, who lives in Hutchinson,
Kansas.
My dad used to tell about getting up at daylight, eating breakfast, and going
to the field to work until just enough time was left for them to cut across the
fields to school. For their lunch they carried in their pocket some dried fruit.
Dad said, "Get a good education, no one can take that from you."
Wilbur has Bachelor, Master, and Specialist degrees in administration.
Donald has Bachelor, Master, and Doctorate degrees in reading; he is at
University of Nebraska at Omaha. I have been Catalog Supervisor at Penny's
Catalog here in Gunnison for 10 years.
My parents left their children a fine heritage, that of honesty and hard
work. My dad was born in Waverly, Kansas, February 7, 1886, and died in 1967.
None of us children live in Barber County, but we are proud to say we were born
and raised, and educated there. We have fond memories of our homeplace.
