Carl and Tea Day
In the fall of 1923 Carl and Tea Day came to Kiowa and started a battery
shop, making batteries. Their shop was in the west side of a building just
east of the Missouri-Pacific railroad tracks. Mr. and Mrs. Roscoe Parker
operated a laundry in the east side.
The Carl Day family left Kiowa in the fall of 1924. At that time, Mrs.
Mollie (Mary) Day and her daughter, Emma K. Day, moved to Kiowa. Mrs. Day
worked as a cook at the Elmore Hotel and Emma entered Kiowa High School as
a freshman.
Feb. 21, 1927, Mrs. Mary Day married Winfred McCombs at Enid, Oklahoma.
The family moved to Panhandle, Texas, where McCombs was an Extra Gang Foreman
for the Atchinson, Topeka, and Santa Fe. They wer laying the first double
track from Wichita, Kans., to Amarillo, Texas. They kept their home in Kiowa
as this was his home section.
Mrs. Mary McCombs died, April 1, 1950. Winfred McCombs died Sept 7. 1960.
Both are buried in Riverview Cemetery, Kiowa.
Emma K. Day married Newell F. Schulze of Dallas City, Ill. on Sept 12,
1930 at Medicine Lodge, Kans. They have made their home in Dallas City, Ill.,
and never moved since they set up housekeeping. Their home was built in 1856
and is the oldest house in Durham Township. It is quite modern thought. Their
three children, Mary, Bill, and Alice were born in the same room of their
grandparents McCombs' home on Coats Street in Kiowa.
Tea Day continued to make batteries for a time. The he bought a tile
building on north sixth street and ran a garage repairing cars and farm
machinery.
Since 1945, he has lived in California.
Tea's stepson, Clifford Sallee, attended Kiowa schools. On Nov. 3, 1935
he married Maxine Derrick. They lived in Kiowa for awhile, then moved to
Wichita. Their daughter was born in 1950, later that year they moved to
California.
He served in the Navy in WWII. On March 8, 1977, he was severely burned
over 65% of his body while at his job. He died April 5, 1977. His wife,
Maxine, and daughter and her family lived in Brookings, Oregon. His mother,
Martha (Day) Reeves lived in Pittsburg, Calif. On Dec 6, 1978, Martha had
a stroke; she passed away Feb. 10, 1979, at the age of 83 years.
Carl Day's family moved back to Kiowa in the late 1930's. He worked as
a mechanic for Mr. Little, who had an Allis Chalmer business. He also drove
Doctor Waite's car for him on night calls or when the weather was bad. One
time during a terrible snow storm, the doctor had an urgent call in the
country. The snow was so deep it was impossible to see the roads. Since they
could drive across the sections, even over the fences, they headed for the
general direction of the farm and arrived safely.
Carl and his family all live in California.
