Barbara J. DeMint


     I, Barbara J. DeMint, was born July 15, 1934, to Charles H. and Faye (Shannon)
  Stout northeast of Hazelton. On May 16, 1974, I married Harvey Leon (Stubby) DeMint.
  We were engaged in agriculture, both farming and cattle. We reside near Hazelton.
     At this writing we are enjoying having my daughter, Debra J., and her three-year
  old son living close to us while her husband (S/Sgt Gary L. Hargett) is serving a
  remote duty with the Air Force in Korea.
     I have three brothers and three sisters. We were all born in Barber County near
  Hazelton. We all received our education at Maple Grove, Sand Creek, or Hazelton
  School Systems.
     Leslie Charles was born December 8, 1916. On July 20, 1940, he married Frances
  Anthony, daughter of Dennis and Lilly Anthony. Les is retired from Climax Molybdenum
  Mine as Electrical Foreman, now living in Attica. They have two children and ten 
  grandchildren.
     Ralph Leland was born October 1, 1920. On November 7, 1942, he married Alvera
 Poppe, daughter of Henry and Anna Poppe. Ralph and Alvera live on the home place.
 They farm and Ralph is Division Foreman with Cities Service Gas Company. They have
 two children, three grandchildren, and one great granddaughter.
    Doris Vyonne was the first daughter born August 18, 1924. On October 24, 1942, 
 she married Dale James Francis, son of Edward and Marie Francis. Dale and Doris
 reside in Derby, Kansas, where Dale is a Construction Superintendent. They have
 three children and six grandchildren.
    Phyllis came along next on Friday, the 13th of November, 1926. She married
 William Eaton (Bill) Brunsteter on August 24, 1947. Bill owned and operated the
 Chrysler-Dodge dealership in Alva, Oklahoma, until health forced him to sell. They
 reside in Alva, Oklahoma, having two children and a grandson.
    William Leonard, (Bill) the third son, was born September 26, 1932. He married
 Doris Giedd, daughter of the Arthur Giedds, July 12, 1960. They reside in Yakima,
 Washington, where Bill is an Aerial Sprayist. Bill and Doris have four children.
    Donna, the youngest of the family, was born December 26, 1938. Donna married 
 Gary Shroyer, son of Arch and Blanche Shroyer on November 17, 1956. Donna and Gary
 reside in Sterling, Kansas, where Gary is supervisor for Lyons Manufacturing. They
 have three children and a granddaughter.
    Our parents were very active in many aspects of the community. Faye passed away
 with cancer, August 25, 1960. Charles was killed in an automobile accident October 
 6, 1969. Faye came to Barber County at a very young age with her parents, Frank and
 Estella Shannon. She and Charlie were married June 2, 1915. Charlie was born April
 22, 1891, on the home place five miles northeast of Hazelton.
    My grandfather, Silas Aaron Stout, came to Barber County in 1884. He secured a
 portion consisting of 160 acres of Section 25, Cedar Township occupied by the Osage
 Indians. He stayed the necessary time in the claim shanty, then returned to Emporia,
 married Sarah Jane Andrew; they returned to Barber County in the spring of 1886. They
 raised a family of six sons and a daughter, Harvey, Ben, George, Charles, Roy, Clem, 
 and Gladys.
