Harvey L. DeMint
I, Harvey Leon (Stubby) DeMint, was born near Hazelton, August 6, 1927, to Harvey
and Audrice DeMint. On May 16, 1974, I married Barbara (Stout) Pollock. I have a
step-daughter, Debra, married to S/Sgt Gary Hargett. They have a son Charles Lee.
We are engaged in agriculture, both farming and cattle. We reside near Hazelton.
My brother, James Joseph, was born near Hazelton, September 12, 1929. We both
attended school at Sand Creek and Hazelton. Jim passed away with cancer October 30,
1977.
My grandfather, James McKee DeMint, was born March 9, 1862, in Henry County,
Illinois. He bame to Barber County from Iowa and homesteaded 160 acres in Cedar
Township, Section 22. On July 9, 1890, he married Eurettie Sherk, whose father was
the United Brethen Minister in Sharon. Eurettie was born December 25, 1869, in
Michigan. James and Eurettie had four sons and two daughters who were all born on
the home place north of Hazelton.
Hazel was born March 4, 1892. On March 9, 1913, she married William Sanders.
They lived in Medicine Lodge, where he worked and retired from the Gyp Mill Plant.
They had nine children.
Harvey Sherk, my father, was born December 13, 1894. He married Minnie Audrice
Murphy on January 2, 1926. they lived in Cedar Township, where he was engaged in
farming. They had the two sons.
Karl C. was born September 19, 1897. He married Letha Lorene Otis from Burlington,
Oklahoma. They lived in Hazelton are until moving to Tonkawa, Oklahoma.
Ebert Lewis was born January 9, 1903. On July 10, 1924 he married Elsie Ruth
Martin. They lived north of Hazelton until moving to western Kansas. They were engaged
in farming until retiring. They have two sons.
Wayne Cleland was born August 4, 1909. Wayne married Fern Riggenbach June 18, 1939.
They have two sons. Wayned farmed later working at the Farmers Co-op in Hazelton. On
December 16, 1971, Wayne married Helen Furber and moved to Wichita. Helen has one son.
The youngest of the family, Wilma Eva, was born September 27, 1915. On August 31,
1938, she married Leo M. Shipers. They have resided in Kiowa, where Leo worked for the
Santa Fe Railroad until his retirement. They have two daughters.
We own and operate the land homesteaded by my grandfather in 1880 in Section 22 of
Cedar Township. It was owned by my father until his death.
We also bought 160 acres in Section 15 of Cedar Township from Clarence Spawr and
Mable (Cushenberry) DeMint. This land was owned by his father, William Lincoln DeMint,
my great uncle. "Uncle Will" was too young to homestead so he purchased this land for
$300 from John Elliott in 1889.
