Amber Dial

Amber Dial, the second son of Walter Dial and Margaret (Maggie) Suter Dial,
was born at Cawker City, Kansas, in 1909. While Amber was quite young the
family traveled by covered wagon to a new home, a farm in northern Woods
County, Oklahoma, not far from Aetna, Kansas. Times were very hard and the
family survivied many setbacks. Walter and Maggie were the parents of five
  children: Willard of Bentonville, Arkansas; Amber (deceased) Hardtner;
  Loretta (Mahan) of Washington, D.C.; Wayne R. (deceased), Wilson, Wisconsin;
and Milton K. (deceased), Las Vegas, Nevada. Amber was seven years of age
when Maggie Suter Dial died suddenly in 1916, leaving Walter with five
small children. The children returned to Cawker City, Kansas, where they
lived with grandparents for several years until their father married Georgia
Miller and made a home for them in Hardtner, Kansas. Walter and Georgia
Miller Dial were the parents of another daughter, Evalina (Gustin), of
  Hardtner, Kansas.
Amber grew to manhood in the Hardtner community, where he graduated from
high school. He attended Woodward Business College for a period. He worked
for various farmers in the Hardtner community and drove a truck for an oil
drilling company before going into business with his father at the Dial
Garage. He purchased the business from his father in 1940 and acquired at
the same time the John Goebel Blacksmith Shop which adjoined it. Amber
moved both buildings and rebuilt a garage and repair shop on the site.
Amber moved his business to a building on the back of the lot where his
home was located in 1950. He ran the garage and repair business from his
home until his death in 1969. Amber was a sportsman, an avid hunter, fisherman,
and conservationist. He loved to hunt with his two Brittany spaniels, Rusty and
Bing, and with good friends, and seldom came home empty handed. He was an
excellent mechanic and often went to the aid of his good customers, even it
it was to the detriment of his own health.
Amber was married to Louise Hull, a schoolteacher, the third of six
daughters of Harry and Edna Hull of rural Hardtner, on October 15, 1938, at
Pratt, Kansas. Amber and Louise have one son, Larry, United States Navy, who
is stationed at Brunswick, Maine. Larry was married to Bernita Patkowski of
Vici, Oklahoma, in 1963. Larry and Bernita Dial have three sons: Kevin, Stephan,
and Christopher, all still at home.
Louise graduated from high school at Alva, Oklahoma and finished a Bachelor's
and Master's degree from Northwestern Oklahoma State University there. She has
done futher post graduate work at Emporia State University, Fort Hays State
University, at the University of Kansas and at Middle Tennessee State University.
Louise taught school for eight years in the Woods County rural schools, three
years in Hardtner, and seven years in Kiowa before taking a job with the Derby
Public Schools, Derby, Kansas, where she is still employed. She presently works
as the Supervisor of Instructional Media Centers. Louise has been quite active
in state and national library work as well as at the local district level and
continues to enjoy being involved in school library media growth.
