Robert Doles
The Robert Doles family came from Chilacotha, Ohio, by covered wagon
and first settled by Elm Hills. They soon found a better place to live,
so they moved west of where the city of Medicine Lodge now stands. (The
site of the Doles School).
There wre seven children in Robert's family. He had four sisters and
two brothers. Robert's father died of tuberculosis, when all the children
were small. His mother reared the children alone from then on.
One of the best remembered stories of Robert's early childhood, was
the Indian story. Robert's mother saw Indians coming toward the house
so she and the children hid in the cornfield. She made the children lay
down and threatened them if they made a sound. They all thought the house
would be burned to the ground when the Indians had gone, but they took
only what provisions they needed and went on.
As a young boy, Robert heard they were going to hang bank robbers east
of town, so he and another boy hid back in some trees and watched the
"hangin".
Robert was a cowboy by trade. He drove cattle for many years, along
the Chisolm Trail. When he was older he stopped "cow punchin" and went
west. He met Althea Schubert in Monument, Colorado. They were married
and had six children before they returned to Kansas. The children were
Alvin, Lester, Elizabeth Lucinda, Bonnie, Dorothy (died as an infant),
and Bertha.
When the family moved back to Kansas, the girls came by train and
the boys by covered wagon. A few years later, the family moved back
to Colorado, because of Mr. Doles' health, Elizabeth, however, stayed
in Medicine Lodge to marry Orville Smith. They were married September 30,
1928, in Kiowa, Kansas at the parsonage of the Congregation Church. They
lived in Kiowa for a short time and then moved back to Medicine Lodge,
where Orville was employed by Charlie Knowles and Frank DeGeer.
They had one son, Herbert Dale (Pete) Smith. They moved to Cherokee,
Oklahoma, in May of 1941. Orville owned the Chevrolet dealership in
Cherokee.
Pete met and married Dorothy Huges, and they had three children;
Cynthia, Michael, and LIsa. Pete farmed andworked at the post office in
Cherokee.
Cynthia became of teacher of English and speech. When she came to
Medicine Lodge to teach and coach plays, she met and married Scott
MacGregor, who is employed by Barber County Savings and loan. They make
their home in Medicine Lodge.
Mike moved to Helena, where he is a counselor at Helena Training
School. He is a talented drummer and plays in music groups in the area.
Lisa attends Cherokee grade school, where she is active in sports
and school activities.
