Raymond Donovan

Raymond Holmes Donovan and Hazel F. Rankin grew up only three blocks apart,
attended Medicine Lodge schools, and were married December 1, 1923, in the
bride's parents home in Medicine Lodge. They left immediately by train for
Oklahoma City. They changed trains at Attica, went to Kiowa where they spent
night, then took the train the next day to Oklahoma City where the bridgroom
was employed at the Liberty National Bank.
The Donovans lived in Oklahoma City about three years. Their son James Rankin
(Jimmy) was born there. They returned to Medicine Lodge where Raymond managed
the People's Oil Station, (now Phipps' Body Shop) several years. Their daughter,
Anita Jane, was born during this time.
They moved to Garden City, where Raymond bought a service station and worked
  at Garden City National Bank.
In 1931 they moved to the ranch, belonging to his father, 15 miles southwest
of Medicine Lodge in the Union Chapel area. Raymond was engaged in farming with
his father. Carol Ann ws born there. The children attended Canema rural school.
They attended Union Chapel and enjoyed community affairs.
When Jim entered high school, Raymond and Hazel purchased his parents home
and spent the winter months in town but continued to operate the ranch, where
  the family spent the summers.
A most frighteneing experience while rearing the family was the time when
tiny toddler Jane fell into the cistern. Raymond was drawing water (the pump
was broken) and caught only a glimpse of Jane as she darted past him, and he
heard her when she hit the water. He jumped in and held her out of the water.
They snapped a harness line into her dress, and Hazel drew her to safety.
Rescuing Raymond ws more difficult. Hazel fastened the line to a heavy stove
leg, and he stood in the bucket with one foot until help arrived.
Following graduation, Jim entered the armed forces and served his county in
the Philippines and Japan. On his return, Jim married June Catherine Stone,
daughter of Clarence and Juanita (Rule) Stone. They established their home on
the ranch where their children, Michael Stone and Gary James, joined the family.
Both sons graduated from KSU Manhattan. Michael married Rhonda McKenzie and has
a son, Brett James. They are continuing the tradition of working the ranch with
his father. Gary is employed at the Farmer's State Bank, Hardtner.
Jane completed high school, attended OU, and recieved her Mater's at Phillips
University. She is principal of a school in Enid, Oklahoma. Jane married Forrest
  E. McCormick, son of Rev. and Mrs. L.H. McCormick. They have four children. Linda
Carol graduated from Phillips University and teaches in Joliet, Illinois. Bradley
Eugene attended West Texas State and OU, then went into Naval Air Force where he
served four years. Jeffery Trent graduated from Westnimster, Fulton, Missouri. He
married Debra Watts and lives in Enid. John David graduated from Westminster also.
He is employed in a St. Louis Bank.
Carol Ann completed high school in Medicine Lodge, graduated from KU, Lawrence,
and taught school several yars. She married David Ward King, nephew of Abe Harrison.
They live in Albuquerque, N.M., where Ward is an attorney. Their children are
Elizabeth Carol, Caroline Louise, and Dvid Holmes, who attend high school in
  Albuquerque.
Raymond and Hazel built their home on North Cedar and are retired. They have
enjoyed many summers in Colorado. They worship at the Presbyterian Church.
