Abe Dunkin and Ada DeMint were married August 1, 1915. They lived on a farm
near Hazelton, Kansas, until the winter of 1938. Abe farmed for a number of
years and also shelled corn for friends and neighbors. He was township road
boss for years. They had three girls and one son. It was our delight while we
were small to run down the road to meet him of an evening and ride back with
him, when he would be coming home from grading roads.
My two sisters and I went to Sand Creek School most of our grade school
years. When Vola, the oldest, was in high school, we drove back and forth to
Sharon to school. While on the farm we attended the Methodist Church at
Hazelton.
While going to country school, sometimes the roads were blocked with snow,
and at such time we would have to be taken in the wagon, covered with quilts
to keep warm. We all had to help with the chores inside as well as outdoors.
I am Lois, and since I would rather be outside, I was the one who helped with
the milking and outside chores.
Our mother belonged to The Progressive Club, and the whole famly enjoyed
their picnics and parties. Both our parents belonged to the Eastern Star at
Hazelton, and father was also a member of the Masonic Lodge at Hazelton.
Father started working for the Barber Conty Road Dept. in 1936. After the
death of our grandmother DeMint, we moved to Sharon in the winter of 1938.
While we were all at home we always spent Christmas with our mother's folks
at Sharon, as long as they were living, and on the way home to the farm, we
would stop by and see our Grandpa Dunkin.
The folks lived at Sharon, until their deaths. Their children are Vola, who
married Lloyed Hoff and lives at Newton, Kansas, where Lloyd is retired from
Cities Service. They have three children and seven grandchildren.
Floe married Keith Hillery and they wre both employed by the Kansas Highway
Department. Both have passed away. They had two daughters and four grandchildren.
They lived at Oakley, Kansas.
Lois married Cecil Wedgewood, and they live at Ness City, where Cecil works
in the oil fields. They have five children and seventeen grandchildren.
Robert married Irma Jean Schott, and they live at colorado Springs, Colorado.
Both are employed at the U.S. Air Force Academy. They have three children.
