Woodford C. Dunkin
Woodford C. Dunkin, of English descent, was born in Quincy, Indiana in 1881.
Woody and his younger brother Lemuel (Lemmie) along with their parents, John
R. and Mary E. (Rice), moved in a covered wagon to Sharon Valley in 1886. The
family settled on a farm 2 mile east and 1 1/2 south of Sharon. To them were
born three more sons and daughters, George, Abram, and twins Edgar and Effie.
The house was small and the boys slept in the attic on corn-shuck matresses.
In 1905 Woody and Amanda (Mandy) Romig of Medicine Lodge were united in
marriage. To this couple were born eight children: Ruthelma, George, deceased,
Clifford, deceased, Richard, deceased, Everett, Ethel, Melvin, and Laurel.
This couple settled in a log house 1 1/2 mile east of Sharon. Their first
child, Ruthelma, was born in the log house. Crop failures and high rent forced
them to move into the chity of Sharon. Woody will long be remembered for his
fine team of horses that pulled the dray wagon and delivered supplies through-
out the city. These same horses also powered the local hearse. Woody also
built and opereated the first school bus in the Sharon school district which
was to and from the Cedar Hill area. In later years he built and/or repaired
many of the buildings that are still a part of Sharon. For a number of years
prior to his death Woody could always be found working with his colonies of
bees or selling honey.
Mrs. Dunkin, Mandy, as she was known by her multitude of friends, will
always be remembered for her motherhood, flower gardens, birds, fish, pets,
and her friendly smilt. She was no newcomer to this part of the United States.
She rode in a covered wagon with her parents during the opening of the Cherokee
Strip in the Oklahoma Territory.
Ruthelma married Howard Schoonover. After his death she moved to ElReno,
Oklahoma. They had four children: Wilma Jean, Betty, Laverne, Sandra and Noel
Lee.
Everett married Marie Mitchel. Everett is employed by the Federal Aviation
Administration, and they have one child, a son, Richard.
Ethel married Melvin Frack, now makes her home in Goddard, Kansas, where
she moved after the death of her husband. They had one child - Linda. Ethel
operates the Dairy Palace in Goddard.
Melvin's wife was Doris Coy and make their home in Sedan, Kansas, and
operate a Do-nut Shoppe. They ahve four children: Gregory, Sharon, Jim and
Sheryl Ann.
Laurel lives in Goddard, Kansas. He married Oretta Owen, and they have
one child - Barbara. Laurel is with the Kansas Highway Patrol.
Everett and Laurel servd with the Armed Forces during World War II, Laurel
in the Navy and Everett with the Air Force.
The greater part of Woody Dunkin's life was spent in Sharon Valley. Along
with his family, I feel sure he felt fortunate to have lived in Barber County.
