Horace Eaton
It was spring in Medicine Lodge in 1949. JoAnn, youngest child of George
and LaVon Stone, was a seventh grader and Horace was in the eighth grade. It
was a nice evening for bicycling - Horace had come by on his bicycle and
begged Mother to let JoAn go bike riding withy him. With Mother's consent
they departed on their respective bikes and promised to be back by nine
o'clock.
At nine-thirty it was dark, they had no lights on their bikes, they
were not home and the Stone family was worried! At ten o'clock Mother
telephoned Horace's parents, Vesta and Sandy eaton, waking them, to inquire
about their son. They were surprised and dismayed upon checking to learn
that Horace, who slept in the basement, was not at home either. Sandy
volunteered to drive around town in his car to look for them but this proved
futile.
We were living in the basement of our home while the upstairs was being
completed. Sometime later JoAnn came happily tripping down the steps, not
knowing the family was "up-set" and "Waiting up" for her. She explained that
a couple more Junior High friends had joined them, and they had been sitting
on the steps of the Boy Scout Cabin telling ghost stories. It was a chilling
expereince for the parents, there "in the dark". JoAnn was unaware her watch
had stopped, making her late.
So began a Junior High courtship that continued through high school and
a few years of college before they married. JoAnn attended Wichita University
and the Kansas City Music Conservatory while Horace attended Phillips University,
Enid, Oklahoma and Wichita University. While both were still in college, they
were married in their home church in Medicine Lodge, on June 14, 1956. When
Horace received his degree in 1957 he had a proud wife and a month old daughter,
Debra Jo, in the audience. JoAnn is an accomplished pianist and her musical
performances have run the gamut from Carnegie Hall in New York City to serving
her church as organist wherever the family attends. She has taught and coached
many State contest winners both vocal and instrumental, including her own
children.
Horace entered the banking field after dealing in insurance for a number of
years. The Eatons are presently living in Guymon, Oklahoma and Horace is
involved in consultation work for establishing new banks.
Their daughter, Debbie, attended Fort Hays State College and when the family
moved to Guyman, she transferred to Panhandle State, Goodwell, Oklahoma. After
three and a half years of college she graduated with a double major in Business
and Accounting. Debbie is working in Oklahoma City, as is her new husband Greg
Bucy. Greg is pursuing a graduate degree in Business Administration in his
"spare time". Debbie and Greg were married March 17, 1979.
Steven, their second child, is a graduate of Guymon High School and will
graduate in the spring from Oklahoma State, Stillwater. He is an excellent
student and will have earned his degree in Business and Accounting in three
years. His music talents include both vocals and instrumental. His recreation
includes camping, backpacking, fishing and all sports.
Lane, the youngest EAton, loves sports of all kinds, he plays football and
is a champion tennis player. He enjoys hunting and fishing. He is a senior in
Guymon High and the "sportsman" of the family.
The Eatons enjoy their ties with family and friends in Barber County and
they return often.
