Vernon Eck
Vernon Eck has lived in Barber County all his life. He was born on the place where
he and his wife, the former Marilyn Liebst, are living now.
We met while I was going to high school in Sharon. Vernon said he sat up and took
notice when I played the French maid in our Junior play. I noticed him before that, when
he was driving by in his Navy uniform! We were married May 24th, the week after graduation.
Even though there were a few crop failures in the early 50's, we were able to produce
a little baby each year. We have 4 boys and 4 girls. Vernon decided, with all that crew,
he had better do something to keep them down on the farm, so to speak, so in 1958, he
bought some milk cows, and the fun began. From then on, the cows ran the farm - they just
insisted on being milked night and morning.
Believe it or not, those kids grew up faster than we could imagine. After the first
one started leaving home, it wasn't long before they all followed. Yvonne married Max
Shippy and has 2 little girls. Shirley, Pete, and Larry lived in Enid, Okla. Pete married
Carol McIlwee; Gene lives in Colwich and will marry Kathy Mannebach soon. Brenda married
Steve Wright and lives in Great Bend with their baby boy. Cindy is going to St. Joseph's
School of Nursing in Wichita, and St4eve is back on the farm. I'm thankful we live in
Barber County, and have a lot of friends.
