Julius Eckell


     John Eckell was born in Hessen, Nassen, Germany in 1865. When he was 18, 
  he came to America, the land of opportunity, to build his future. Two years
  were spent in Indiana, then he came to Kansas and lived near Medicine Lodge
  and Isabel.
     Wilhelmine Caroline Kuehn was born in Parvona, Poland, in 1872. Minnie
  lived with her aunt and uncle until age 16 when she sailed for America. She
  came to Nashville, Kansas, and later found work at Medicine Lodge.
     They met and were married in 1891. In 1902 they moved to a farm as
  pioneers near Isabel. They had fourteen childrten; twelve grew to adulthood.
  Several made Barber county their home. They attended Eldred, Isabel, and
  Medicine Lodge Schools. The six sons were Henry, George, Julius, Walter,
  Herman, and Paul. Daughters were Gertrude, Aurelia, Erna, Meta, and Velma 
  (Billie).
     They were industriuos and unassuming people, faithful Lutherans, who
  reared their family in that faith. John was a stern father. As farmers,
  they raised wheat and harvested with a horsedrawn binder or header and
  threshed with a steam engine thresher. They butchered as many as 20 hogs
  at one time, cured the meat, fried some down and covered with lard to 
  preserve it. They rendered lard and made sausage. They churned butter to
  sell. Kraut was made by the barrelful. Minnie baked 3 big loaves of bread
  daily. The coffee pot was always on the back of the woodburning stove.
     Henry homesteaded in Montana. He was a mess Sargeant in the army and
  dealt with conscientious objectors, returning to Barber County after WWI.
  Geroge managed a road crew.
     Julius was born in 1897. In 1923 he married Frieda Thom, who was born
  in Nebraska in 1893 and came to Barber County. She was a Santa Fe telegrapher
  for ten years and helped finance the education of her younger brother and
  sister. Julius and Frieda went to Michigan, where they worked for Fisher-
  Body. After retirement, they went to Florida where they had a bait station
  near Skyway bridge. After ten years, they returned to Medicine Lodge. Frieda
  was a 'shut-in' from arthritis and died in 1977. 
     Walter lived on the family farm until his death; Herman resides near
  Sawyer, Kansas. Paul married Thelma Dunham. They reared three children in
  Barber County.
     Gertrude married Goff Davenport, Aurelia married Glenn Lehner. They have
  two sons and live in Dodge City. Erna was a prominent teacher for many years. 
  She taught in Japan and Germany and made overseas tours including the Holy
  Land. She had retired from teaching and was living in Oregon at the time of
  her death.
     Meta died at age sixteen. Leah taught school, then married Claire Farren.
  She is retire from Boeing and lives in Derby, Kansas. Billie is a registered
  nurse and is supervisor of surgical nursing at Wesley Medicial Center in
  Wichita, Kansas. She was married to Wayne (Mac) McConnell, now deceased.
     John was deceased in 1923 and Minnie in 1947.
     Julius lives at Indian Plaza in Medicine Lodge. He enjoys his Church and
  activities at Leisure Center.
