Leon Eckert, youngest of eight children of Mr. and Mrs. S.C. Eckert, was
born in Kiowa and has made his home there since. He and Wanda Benningfield,
Alva, Oklahoma, were married in 1949 shortly after he began working for the
post office continueously, first as a city carrier, and since 1957 as a
rural carrier. He now carries mail out of Burlington and Byron, Oklahoma,
but their home is in Kiowa. He has also helped manage the Paradise Bowling
Alley in Kiowa for some time. Wanda worked for the Kiowa News after their
marriage until the birth of their daughter in 1953. After staying home with
her family for several years, she began work as a secretary at the Kiowa
Elementary School in 1965, and since 1971 has been secretary to the super-
intendent and clerk of the school board.
Leon graduated from Kiowa High School, and Wanda from Farry High School
in Oklahoma and attended Northwestern State College. They have two children,
Linda and Larry. Linda graduated from the Kiowa High School in 1971, and
Larry from the South Barber High School, Kowa, in 1976. Linda is a graduate
of the Hutchinson School of Nursing and presently works for the Sedgwick
County Health Department at Wichita and is completing her preceptorship as
nurse clinician. Larry attended Voc. Tech school at Salina one year and
attended one year at Pittsburg State College. He is presently working there
and hopes to get back in this area eventually.
