Tom Edes
Tom and Sarah Cline Edes came to Barber County from Pennsylvania and Virginia in
the 1860's or 1870's. They settled in the Cream Valley area. The Edes were considered
quite wealthy for those days. At one time Tom owned 1,000 acres of corn, plus other
acreages. The railroad even built a spur from the main line to the Edes place in order
to ship his corn.
I have heard stories of how people hid in his corn fields during the Indian scare
in 1885.
Good times turn to bad, and eventually Tom lost all his land.
During the later years of his life he spent much of his time around Medicine Lodge.
He befriended a little orphan girl and was often seen sitting in front of the hotel
holding the little girl on his knee.
Tom Edes took his own life in Medicine Lodge.
