Elmore-Clark-Schooley
John Elmore and his wife Clementine Pauline with their two small daughters, Mae
and Nellie, came from Missouri to Harper in 1883. After living there two years
John Elmore homesteaded north of Hazelton, in the Cedar Hill area of Barber County;
one quarter was a school quarter, the other was called a tree quarter. The family
moved there from harper in 1885. Besides being a farmer and stockman my grandfather
was also a carpenter and built the first Cedar Hill schoolhouse.
In 1892 after Mae and Nellie had finished the 8th grade at Cedar Hill School, Mrs.
Elmore took the two girls and returned to Harper so the girls could attend high
school. She also started a millinery shop. The girls graduated from Harper High
School in 1897, and that fall Nellie started at the University of Kansas.
In 1898 the Elmores bought a house in Kiowa and moved from the farm to Kiowa. John
Elmore died in 1898. Mrs. Elmore moved her millinery shop to Kiowa and she and Mae
ran it for several years. Nellie gave piano lessons in Kiowa, Hardtner and Hazelton
and then returned to K.U. for one more year. While in Harper she had met Lloyd Clark
and in 1901 they were married.
They both taught school, first at Harper tnd then Argonia. In 1903 they came back
to the home place north of Hazelton and started farming the two quarters that Grand-
mother Elmore owned and also the ranch by Aetna which Grandfather had acquired. They
had a partnership with my grandmother, who remained in Kiowa with her millinery store.
I was born in 1907, the only child of Lloyd and Nellie Clark. We lived on the farm
and I also attended Cedar Hill School. My grandmother was always a business woman,
and in 1915 she built the Elmore Hotel. It still stands and is now the Kiowa Supper
Club.
In 1916 Lloyd Clark died, and after a year my mother and I moved to Kiowa to live
with my Grandmother. I attended Kiowa schools and graduated from Kiowa High in 1924.
I attended the University of Kansas, graduated in 1928 and received my Masters in 1929.
I taught in a junior college in Iowa for one year, then came back to Kiowa where I
met J. Robert Schooley, who was then working for Western Power and Light Company.
We were married in 1931 and moved to Altamont, Kansas. Bob continued to work for
the utility company until 1937. Our first child was born in Watonga, Oklahoma in
1937; bobbie only lived 3 1/2 years. In 1937 at Christmas time we came back to Kiowa
to help my mother run the Elmore Hotel and manage the farms. The hotel was sold in
1938, and Bob then dovoted all his time to farming.
Throught the years my mother and grandmother bought more land until faming it was
a big operation. We have always lived in Kiowa and our other two sons were born here.
Larry in 1938 and Max in 1941. Our boys attended school in Kiowa and later the
University of Kansas.
Larry married a girl he met at KU., Nancy Rundio from Lake Lotawana, Missouri. He
served six years in the Navy and then returned to KU and earned his doctorate degree.
They now live in Tucson, Arizona, where Larry is a professor at the University of
Arizona. They have two daughters, Ann and Jennifer.
Max came out of the University a 2nd lieutenant in the Air Force and has made a
career of the service. He is now a major, stationed at Langley AFB in Virginia. Max
married Cherly Henningson of Norton, Kansas and they have two sons, Monte Max and
Chad.
Bob and I stil live in Kiowa and have enjoyed our years here. Bob was active in
many things - Masons, Consistory and Shrine; Boy Scouts; Lions Club and Chamber of
Commerce. He served 25 years on the county's Soil Conservation Board and was a
director in the Bank of Kiowa many years. He currently is a director and vice
president of the Farmers State Bank at Hazelton.
I am past matron and past district aide of Eastern Star, was a Cub Scout den
mother 8 years, and am a member of Delphi, a federated club. We both are members of
