Gerald Elwood
My parents moved to Barber County for the first time when I was in the
third grade. They had lived in Moreland, Oklahoma, where I was born April
30, 1946. My brother Harold was born March 1, 1943, and my sister Mary
Lou was born June 20, 1950. My parents are Neil and Marguerite Hartley
Elwood of Hardtner. At that time we lived only a short time in Barber
County and moved back to the Burlington, Oklahoma area from 1955 until the
fall of 1958. My father was employed by E.C. Davis.
We again moved to Barber County to the McBrayer Ranch northwest of
Hardtner, where I lived until my marriage to Janet Wilhite, July 31, 1966.
Janet is the daugher of David and Neva Wilhite. We were both attending
college at Northwestern in Alva, Oklahoma. We graduated in 1968.
We began our teaching career at Mankato, Kansas. I taught Industrial
Arts, Math and was Assistant Football Coach. Janet taught 6th grad and
junior high Home Economics. We taught four years in Mankato, returning to
Barber County in 1972. We lived just east of Hardtner and I was employed
by the Coontz Implement Company. We purchased a home in Kiowa and moved
in 1973 to Kiowa. Janet began teaching in the South Barber Elementary
School in the 5th and 6th grade Math in the fall of 1973 and is still
teaching at this time.
Janet's interests include sewing, canning and gardening. She is
currently co-superintendent of the Homemakers Department of the Barber
County Fair and President of the Young Homemakers EHU of Kiowa.
We have a daugther, Kelli Jolene, born June 23, 1978, and she has
increased our interes in photography. My hobbies include boating, hunting,
fishing and training my horse. I am presently working for Haynes Miller
and this gives me the chance to use my horse. Our plans are to stay in
Barber County and enjoy our daughter's growth. She holds many new surprises
every day.
