John N. Emmele
John Nicholas Emmele was the son of Nicholas and Rosalie Prockish Emmele.
He was born March 13, 1882 at Flush, Kansas, a small town northeast of
Manhattan. He was an elder brother of S.G. (Ross) Emmele. He came to Barber
County in 1903 with Mr. and Mrs. Otto Winter and family. He worked for farmers
in the Sharon and Hazelton Communities.
He married Virginia Cole of Sharon and I, Juanita, was born in January,
1910. I attended the Sharon Public Schools all but one year. My fifth, year,
Bertha Cole, I and my aunt, went to school in Hutchinson. I graduated in
the spring of 1928 and that fall Acie Coffman and I were married. Acie,
along with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Coffman and three sisters, Ione,
Inez and Ruth, moved from eastern Kansas to Barber County in the fall of 1922.
Acie had two elder married brothers, Rist and Dewey.
Acie and I were married in Kingman and then went to Wichita to spend the
night with friends, Alice and Russell Marshall. When we left the next morning
it was raining very hard. We had planned to visit Acie's brother, Dewey and
family, but because of the flooding, we didn't get there. We were marooned
in Lebo for two nights and one day but, as soon as the flood waters receded
we returned home.
Our first two years were spent in Hazelton and our first baby was born
while we were there. Then we moved to a farm east of Sharon where our three
other children were born. The three boys went to Enon school. After we had
lived there for several years, some of the ladies of the community formed
what we called the "Stitch and Chatter" Club. We met at one of the homes
once a month for an all-day meeting. We worked for thehostess and had a
covered diss dinner. It was very enjoyable working, visiting and eating with
friends and neighbors. In 1944 we moved to eastern Kansas. The three boys
received the Bachelor of Science degree at Kansas State Teachers College of
Emporia.
In December of 1958, we moved to Southwest City, Missouri, where our
daughter graduated from high school in 1960. Later she attended Beauty School
in Joplin.
Our children are Robert and Rex of Wichita, Ron of Ellisville, MO. and
Anita Gilgen of Neel, Mo. We have 16 grandchildren (8 boys and 8 girls) and
1 great grandson. Acie and I celebrated our 50th anniversary November 19, 1978.
My father, John, bought out Henry Drake's share of the garage with William
Cooper in 1920. It was known as the Emmele and Cooper Garage in Hazelton. He
retired in Oct. 1958 and moved to Kiowa and lived in the Landis Hotel. Later
he moved to the Kiowa Manor and passed away March 8, 1975. He is buried in
the Kiowa Cemetery.
