Benjamin English
Benjamin English was born in Kentucky and as a child moved with his family to
Cass County, Missouri. As a young man he met Rebecca WArnstaff and they became
engaged. She moved to Lake City, Kansas with her family, by covered wagon, and
Ben followed shortly afterward. He and Becky were married at Lake City in 1883
on January 1, and homesteaded a farm a few miles out of town.
Their daughters, Bertha English Bateman and Maude English Burton, and their
son, Auga English remembered their telling of occasional hard-riding cowboys
coming by the farm to warn of danger from raiding bands of Indians. This meant
hurring by wagon to the nearest protective stockade. With no doctor available,
Becky English developed an interest in caring for sick neighbors as well as her
own family, and it wasn't unusual for the family to have to get along without
her for several days at a time, as she was off with her horse and buggy to
someone requiring her help.
Ben's family moved out from Missouri to be near him, and his sister, Orpha,
married Harry Stone. They were long-time residents of Medicine Lodge. Ben's
brother, Bob English, later married Nellie Ross of Medicine Lodge and they lived
there until his death in 1910.
The Ben English family lived in Lake City and Coats where their children,
Maude, Effie, Aura, and Bertha were born. He later had a grocery store in Medicine
Lodge before the family moved to Attica, Kansas, in 1910. He farmed there until
his death in 1933.
