Myra Mounsey Esser
Myra Elizabeth, only daughter and oldest child of George and Ada Mary
Mounsey, was born Feb. 16, 1908 about 8 miles south of Medicine Lodge. My
parents were from England. My father came to America with his parents, eight
sisters and two brothers in 1889 and settled in Barber County. Mother came
in 1906 and they were married in Dec. 1906. They lived south of town where
Dad was engaged in farming and ranching until 1918 when we moved to Medicine
Lodge.
Sadness came to our home when my brother, William, eight years old died
of tetanus in August 1921. August, 1922 I had typhoid fever - the only
person in Barber County who had it. In September Mother came down with the
fever and passed away in October, 1922, so I became the 'little' housekeeper
and cook for my father and two brothers, Robert and Garnett. Garnett was
only three years old when Mother died, but with Dad's help and with Aunt
Ada Willan coming in often from the country to help, we managed. My Father
passed away in August, 1948. Dad practiced the Golden Rule - was always
thinking of others before himself.
Robert and his wife, Gladys live in Lawrence, Kansas. Robert retired in
1975 as Director of Utilities for the city of Lawrence, having worked 40
years with that city's water department. Garnett lives at Kiowa, Kansas
and has a paper route.
My first four years of school were at Sunflower school south of Medicine
Lodge. I then entered Medicine Lodge Grade and High School, graduating in
1926. I took a post graduate course, bookkeeping and typing in 1927, then
went to Southwestern College, Winfield, Kansas, majoring in Home Ec. I
graduated in 1931.
After graduating from College, I stayed at home and worked as a waitress
for "Mom and Pop" Hart at the Hart's Hotel and Cafe over eight years. In
May, 1941 I married Allen Esser, who worked for Kansas Power and Light Co.
as a meter man. Al came to Barber County in 1929 from Deer Creek, Okla. We
lived in the Union Chapel area 3 years, then near Sawyer at the Lake City
dehydration plant 3 years, moving back to Medicine Lodge in 1947. Al retired
in 1962. Our two sons, George and Bob graduated from Medicine Lodge High
School. Both played football, Bob making the All-Star team, and George
received honorable mention on the team. George and his wife, Judy, live near
Deerfield, Kansas, and Bob-Robert and his wife, Lesta (Freeman) live in
Riverton, Wyoming. We have three granddaughters and one grandson.
Happy memories of my childhyood days are the afternoon teas at Grandmother
Mounsey's and my Aunt's homes. Being English Grandmother and Aunts had their
four o'clock tea every afternoon. Another childhood memory is of the
Chautauqua and Circuses we always attended when they came to town.
