Emily Jane Heydenreich Ewart

I am Emily Jane, fifth daughter of Emil and Lila Heydenreich, born February
20, 1932. I arrived weighing 3 1/2 pounds. I was told Mother gave me the name
Emily Jane, after a heroine from a story in Capers Weekly.
My childhood memories are precious and vivid. I remember having my tonsils
removed at the age of three, along with sister Georgia and Lucille, by Doctor
  Grigsby.
I attended grade school at Sunflower School, District 34; I was the only
child in my grade, except on year.
Going to high school was a terrifying experience at first. Having never
had classmates in my grade, I knew only one other girl, Gretta Cavin from
Isabel. The building looked so big and scary, but I soon found friends. I
found a job as a waitress at Roesslers' Cafe and later at Lyle's Cafe and
then worked at the Sweet Shop for Bud Rodgers.
I recall hot windy summers, hanging bushel baskets of clothes on the line
(since we were a large family), canning, the smell of rendering lard, and
cold mornings when we dressed under the bed covers. When it was really cold
Momma would warm bricks in the oven, wrap them in newspaper and put them at
the foot of our beds for warmth. Our home was always a warm one, full of
  love and laughter.
I always loved Christmas and recall when Mother always told us Santa
wouldn't come unless we cleaned the house; so we washed cupboards, cleaned
our drawers, etc. so that he would arrive. I remember pulling taffy and
decorating the tree Daddy cut and brought in. We'd pop popcorn, string it
and make paper bells to decorate the tree. Daddy taught us to play cards but
  was very strict.
After graduating from high school in 1950, I bacame a telephone operator
in Topeka. Later I moved to Colorado and then for a short time to California.
I returned to Colorado and married Gerald D. Morris of Wichita, Kansas. We
had two children, Gerald D., Jr. and Susan Carol.
After our marriage dissolved, I returned with the children to Wichita in
1962, where I was employed by City Blue Print. I married DeWane Ewert of
Marion, Kansas in 1970. We still reside in Wichita where DeWane is a State
Farm Insurance agent and I am secretary at the Messiah Baptist Church.
My parents and three brothers are gone to join the Lord, but with me
always are my memoires and the blessings of the Lord
