Paul Fair
Paul Rule was born October 7, 1892 to James Andrew and Nettie E. Rule Fair
at Sharon, Kansas. He was one of four children: Merle (Married W.A. Kahrs),
Dale, deceased, (married Christine, then Ann) and Esther (married Gordon
Lindley, deceased). Paul graduated from Barber County High School in
Medicine Lodge in 1910 and then attended Kansas University at Lawrence,
Kansas.
Merle L. was born September 15, 1891 to Lewis J. and Ella Belle Ligon
Balding east of Medicine Lodge. Around 1899 her parents and family moved to
the Balding place across the road, west of the Walstead School, where they
all attended school. She had one sister, Florence, deceased, (married Otis
Shore, deceased), four brothers: Ray, deceased, (married Ada Kritzmeyer,
deceased, then Cora Wells, deceased), Robert, deceased, (married Lois Hart
Whitaker, deceased), John (married Carrie Springer), and Lewis (married
Mildred Warren).
Paul and Merle were married February 14, 1917 at Sharon, Kansas. They
livedin Blackwell and Ponca City, Oklahoma and then moved to Wichita in
1924. Paul worked for the Rock Island Lumber Company, Jackson Walker, Boeing,
and for Goldsmith Athletic Equipment Company.
Paul played professional baseball with Oklahoma City in the Oklahoma
League and later in the Texas and Texas-Oklahoma Leagues. He was inducted
into the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame in 1970, served as secretary-treasurer
of the Wichita Men's Association for 26 years and was associated with the
National Baseball Congress in several capacities. He played in the first
NBC Kansas Tournament in 1931. In 1935 he umpired, as well as played, in
the state tournament.
Paul and Merle had three daughters: Eleanor (married Dudley Tankersley
and lives in Abilene, Texas), two daughters, Claudia (m. Tom Ainsworth) and
Carolyn Mildred (married Lyle Willis aned they live near Valley Center,
Kansas), and Virginia (married Sam McGuinn and they live at the west edge
of Sedgwick, Kansas, where they farm). Virginia and Sam have four sons:
Tom (married Jerri Hart and lives in Wichita); Michael "Mick" (married
Joyce Johnson and they have three sons; Micheal, Scott, Steven and dauaghter
Michelle, they live in Sedgwick); David lives in Springfield, Missouri; Jim
(married Renea Marsh and theylive in Halsted, Kansas).
Paul passed away November 15, 1973 in Wichita, where Merle continued to
maintain her home until 1977, when she moved to Sedgwick Convalescent Home
in Sedgwick, Kansas; here she is close to two of her daughters and their
husbands, and some of her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren.
Paul's interment is in Resthaven Gardens of Memory, 10216 West 54 Highway,
Wichita, Kansas.
In 1978 Paul was posthumously inducted into the Kansas Bowling Hall of
Fame.
Merle died on February 5, 1980.
