Elkannah Farmer


     Elkannah 'Caney' Farmer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alanson Farmer, was born 
   March 16, 1872 in Carrol County, Virginia. He moved to Hancock County, 
   Illinois with his family at the age of 2 years. During their stay here, 
   his mother became ill and died. In 1886, at the age of 14, he went by
   covered wagon with his family to Reno County; later they moved to south
   west Pratt county.
      He married Miss Jennie M. Bird on September 7, 1897; she was the
   daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob D. Bird and former residents of Oakland,
   Iowa. Two daughters were born to this union, ruby and Ruth. At the age
   of 4 1/2 years, Ruby was stricken with spinal meningitis and died shortly
   thereafter.
      Mr. and Mrs. Farmer and small daughter, Ruth, started their home along
   the Medicine River near Sun City. During their early married live they
   lived in Oklahoma, California, and Canada. They homesteaded about 70 miles
   west of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. They lived there about 8 years, then
   returned to Kansas, then to Barber County in 1929. They settled on a farm
   home about 3 miles east of Lake City and again alongside the Medicine
   River.
      Caney became an active member of the Masonic Lodge in Lake City. He
   and Jennie worked the farm together until Caney became ill and died
   September 15, 1939. Jennie continued on the farm with the help of her
   grandson, Leslie Peterson until the fall of 1942. She then moved to
   Hugoton to be with her daughter, Mrs. Ruth Peterson. She continued to
   reside here until she became ill and died May 2, 1946. Jennie's sister
   was a resident of Lake City for many years. Mrs. Lester (Susie) Freeman.
