William Andrew Forsyth
Bill Forsyth was born October 7, 1923, to Leslie and Estelle Forsyth.
Childhood summers were spent swimming, playing baseball, and traveling
with parents and grandfather, W.R. Forsyth.
School was not fun until high school in 1937, when he could participate
in sports and band. In fact, before 1937 it was not much fun for all ages
because of hard times, dust storms, and drouth. Our high school was blessed
with much talent and good teaching; we always did better than most schools.
One great pleasure was helping win 2nd in the 1941 State Basketball
Tournament and bing the state's leading scorer. Other happy times were
being elected Secretary of State at the Legion's Boys State and being
president of the high school Student Council.
After leaving high school in 1941, Bill played basketball at Kansas
University. Joining the Navy, he was sent to the University of Pennsylvania
in Philadelphia and played more basketball. Another threill was when 14,000
people gave him a standing ovation for a job well done. After officer's
training in New York City, he spent the rest of WWII in the Pacific on an
LST and minesweeper, receiving three battle stars. Before returning home
he was fortunate to travel to Japan, Taiwan, Shanghai, and China.
In 1946, returning to Kansas University for his final year, he was lucky
to meet Janice Nattier from Concordia, Kansas; they were married June 22,
1947.
After marriage, they came home and joined his father and grandfather in
the family furniture and funeral business. During the next 25 years, Bill
and Jan had three children: Paula Gail, born December 30, 1948; William
Andrew (Drew), born August 23, 1950; Charles Bradley (Brad), born December
7, 1953. Bill and Jan spent their time raising their children to the best
of their ability, feeling this was the most important job in life. The
children gave them many happy hours and, to Bill and Jan's pleasure, all
turned out better than their parents.
Much time was spent trying to make Medicine Lodge a better place to live.
When Bill was fifty and the children had left home, Bill and Jan took flying
lessons, got their own plane, and enjoyed a new and exciting world.
Paula left Kansas University as a Physical therapist, married Dr. Fred
Cromes, and has two girls, Abbe and Paige.
Drew left Kansas University with a business degree and worked all over the
US and Canada. While in Ottawa, Canada, he met and married Maurine Kearney.
They moved back to Medicine Lodge to join the family business; they have one
daughter, Kelly.
Brad graduated from business school in Kansas State University and at
present is in the business world in Kansas City and is a swinging bachelor.
Bill's attitude toward life is there is good in everyone - look for it;
the most pleasure comes from doing something for somebody else; remember the
good times; and keep charging ahead to something new and exciting.
