Clif Freeman

William Clifton Freeman was born June 26, 1904, to W.S. Freeman and Mary
Caroline (Carrie Bales) his wife, on a farm 1 1/2 miles north of Sun City,
Kansas. My brothers are Chester E. and Clyde D., with sisters Ida, Caroline
(Dollie - Mrs. J.R. Olmsted), Mary Ethel (Mrs. Geo. Urton), and Lucy Belle
  (Mrs. Dan Winnop).
I attended grade school and high school at Sun City, but graduated from
high school at Winfield, Kansas. I graduated from Southwestern College with
an AB Degree from Wichita State University with a Masters Degree in Education.
I was in the education field for thirty-nine years, having taught in the
following schools: Crooked Creek, Isabel, Fellsburg, Lake City, Norwich,
Haysville, and six years as County Superintendent of Barber County.
I was married to Nora Elsie Sylender on September 8, 1925, at Winfield,
Kansas, on the day I enrolled in college, where my wife was attending and
later graduated. To assist financially, I worked on the campus for thirty-
nine cents per hour, also on a construction crew starting at thirty-five
cents per hour; I was then promoted to foreman of the concrete construction
crew, to fifty cents per hour.
My hobbies were sports such as fishing, hunting, baseball, basketball,
football, reading, and visiting with neighbors and friends.
Some of the things I recall most vividly are that we either walked one
and one-half miles to school or drove in a buggy over roads that were very
poorly maintained. On cold days rocks were heated in the old range stove oven,
wrapped in a blanket, and put in the bottom of the buggy to keep our feet warm.
Sun City was a nice little western town with such business places as Bissantz
General Merchandise, the livery barn, hotel, post office, elevator, doctors
offices, Baldings General Merchandise. There was also the church and school,
Metz Lumber and hardwar, barber shop, Sears General Merchandise, and First
  State Bank.
Both my wife and I were in the field of education for twenty-one years
together. My work was mostly in the field of coaching, social science, and
administration. Hers was English and languages. We both enjoyed our work very
much, having met a goodly number of wonderful students and friends of whom
  we are very proud.
I have enjoyed the pleasure of serving on the state library board for
schools; also as state representative of the 100th district for Barber and
Harper Counties. I was board member of the housing authority of Medicine Lodge
and the Council for the Aging of the Leisure Center. I am a member of Masonic
Delta Lodge No. 77, and both my wife and I are members of the Eastern Star,
and members of the Lake City Methodist Church.
