Lester Glendale Freeman
Lester Freeman was the oldest of six sons born to Samuel and Laura Ward
Freeman. He was born in Lee County, Iowa, May 12, 1883. Two brothers, Howard
(Jack) and Ralph, were born in Iowa, and then the family moved to Ft. Scott,
Kansas. Here two more brothers were added to the bamily, Scott and Basil.
The next move was to Pratt County, where Ivan was born. Lester (or L.C., as
he signed his name) spent his life as a farmer and rancher. He was a lover
of the out-of-doors and nature, true to his Indian heritage.
Susie Belle Bird, the youngest of nice children of Jacob and Mary Jane
Cross Bird, was born in Oakland, Iowa, July 24, 1888. When she was very
small, her folks took a claim near Mitchell, Oklahoma. Due to her mothers
poor health, they moved to Pratt County, where they operated a hotel in
Cullison, Kansas.
Susie and Lester were married in Pratt, August 1, 1906. They spent their
life on a farm or ranch in Pratt and Barber Counties. On year back in 1919,
they pulled up stakes and traveled by covered wagon to western Kansas. As
all old-timers remember, that was the year the grasshoppers harvested the
crops. So back the Freemans came to stay. Some of the places they lived
while rearing their children were the Rockefeller ranch, Shaw Ranch, Skinner
Ranch, Sun City and Lake City.
They felt fortunate that in raising nine children they never had much
sickness. Doctor Campbell did come to the house and remove Mary's tonsils on
the kitchen table with the aid of a kerosene lamp.
One great occasion was when Lester and Susie celebrated their Golden
Anniversary with all their children attending. After retirement they moved
to Medicine Lodge. Lester died April 24, 1964. In July 1974, Susie moved to
the Parkview Manor in Macksville, Kansas. She died June 21, 1979.

Mary Gertrude (Barstow), March 28, 1914; Norwood Scott, October 11, 1916;
