Don Friend
Don and Bernice Friend met in Wichita in August of 1957. Don had 4 children;
Kathy 9, James 7, Max 6, and Danny 20 months. Don's wife had died when Danny
was born, so he was praying for the Lord to send him a wife and mother for
his children.
Bernice had returned from Japan 2 years before, where she had served the
Lord as missionary. She had been under doctor's care since returning and had
just been given medical clearance to get a job; and after a year, she would
be reconsidered to return to the field. She stopped to visit her sister who
lived across the street from Don and his children. While there, she received
word that the job she had counted on in California was no longer available.
In a week's time it became evident that the job Bernice was to take was that
of permanant housekeeper for Don and his children. They were married 6 weeks
later.
The next spring they moved to a small farm in Marion County. In the 5 years
they lived there a son, Dean, and a daughter, Ann were added to the family.
They moved to the Norwich community, and they decided that Bernice should
return to college to finish requirements for a teacher's certificate. During
this time Danny had a cerebral hemorrhage and died. In a year's time she had
finished college and went back to teaching school.
Don had been working at Boeing and Lear Jet. He bought 15 colonies of bees
and started a business he enjoyed very much. He built up the business by
buying a few colonies here and a few there. Some bees were located in the
Medicine Lodge area. He built an apartment on the north end of the building
and the south end has a store and extracting room.
We enjoy the spacious, quiet beauty of this area and are glad to be here.
