George Fritz
My grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Orlando Frederick Fritz, moved from Ohio with
their daughter, Anna, to Barber County in 1887, settling near Sexton, Aetna
township. My fahter, Geo. L., was born in 1886, one of seven children. My
grandmother died in 1895; she and two of their children were buried on my
grandfather's farm, which is now a part ob Z Bar Ranch. After her death, my
grandfather, with his children returned to Ohio.
When my father was fifteen, he left home and returned to Barber County,
where he worked on the Platt and Holmes ranches before homesteading in Aetna
township. In 1916 he established a ranch in Deerhead township which I operate.
That year my father and mother (Eliza Lane) were married. They had three
children - Tina Jewell (died in infancy); Rita (Mrs. George Wright) who resides
in Colorado, and myself.
I attended grade school at Deerhead and graduated from Medicine Lodge High
School in 1938. Dorothy Kimball, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hary Kimball (the
Kimballs were another pioneer family who came from Butler County in the late
1890's, and the Palmers in the early 80's) graduated in the same high school
class, and we were married August 16, 1942.
After serving 39 months in the U.S. Army during World War II and then
graduating from Kansas Stte University in 1946, George became Hodgeman County
Agricultural Agent for 1 1/2 years; then was employed i Topeka by the Kansas
Livestock Association for 9 1/2 years before becoming manager of the CK Ranch,
Brookville, for 9 1/2 years. In December 1966, we returned to Barber County
and established our ranching operation.
Our two children were born in Topeka and were graduated from Medicine Lodge
High School (Jan '69 and Randy '73). Jan (Mrs. Richard Clark) lives in
Manhattan. She recieved a B.S. degree in 1973 and M.S. degree in 1974 from
Kansas State University. Randy attended Kansas State University two years
before returning to become associated in the ranching operation. He and Melva
(Peters) of Waynoka, Oklahoma, were married in 1978.
Dorothy was a charter member and a past president of the Kansas CowBelles,
a charter member and a board member of the American National CowBelles, and a
past president of the Barber County CowBelles. She has served as Winfield
District Treasurer of the United Methodist Women, and is a member of Order of
the Eastern Star. She actively participates in the Monday Afternoon Club
(Federated) and Deerhead Circle Club. She has been the church secretary at
the United Methodist Church for more than ten years.
George served as president of the Kansas Hereford Association in 1961 and
president of the Kansas Livestock Association in 1970. He has served as director
of the American National Cattlemen's Association, and for more than 20 years
was a member of the American Royal Board of Governors. He has been Barber
County Republican Chairman for 12 years. He is a Mason and an Eastern Star
