Chester B. Fullerton
Three generations of Fullertons have operated the First National Bank of
Medicine Lodge for seventy years.
Luther Washington Fullerton, born in Pleasant Hope, Missouri, moved to
Hazelton, Kansas, with his parents, James C. and Sarah Elizabeth Fullerton,
about 1889. Employed in the State Bank of Hazelton, Luther met and married
a school teacher, Mary Elizabeth Betty; and her parents, John Fitzgerald
and Anna Margaret Betty, she had moved to Hazelton from her birthplace,
Milan, Illinois.
In 1908 Luther and Mary Elizabeth moved to 319 North Walnut, Medicine
Lodge; Luther joined the Citizens State Bank (a predecessor of First
National Bank). Here he labored until his death in 1939. Mary Elizabeth
died in 1941.
The Fullertons were faithful members of the Methodist Church; both
sang in the choir. Mary Elizabeth, a pianist and vocalist, served on the
Music Committee, was a charter member of the Home Missionary Society and
a member of the Foreign Missionary Society and Laidis Aid. Luther organized
and taught two large Sunday School classes, served as Sunday School
Superintendent, on the Board of Trustees, on the Building Committee of
1914, and as Lay Delegate to four Annual Conferences. During the winters
of 1914 to 1918, their new home at 319 North Walnut hosted choir rehearsals,
board meetings, and other church functions.
Their children were Gerald, deceased at 18 months; Chester B; Dorothy
Louise (Mrs. Frank Marsh) who died in 1964; and Evangeline (widow of William
R. McCulley) now Mrs. Raymond Harris of Wichita. Five boys blessed the
Harris household; Robert, Jon, Steve, Craig, and Don Harris; Don, the
youngest, died in 1975.
Chester B. Fullterton, born in Hazelton, graduated from Medicine Lodge
schools and attended Kansas University. He entered the bank in 1925, and
became its president upon his father's death in 1939. Today as Chairman
of the Board, he continues active in the bank.
In 1930 Chester married Marjorie Bowman, daughter of Earl J. and Buena
V. (Holland) Bowman of Pawnee Rock, Kansas. Marjorie, a graduate of Bethany
College, Lindsborg, Kansas, taught music in Medicine Lodge schools. Her
greatest professional thrill was as soloist in Lindborg's production of
"The Messiah" to be seated with the famous diva, Madame Schumann-Heink.
Marjorie's musical talent was devoted to the Methodist Church where she
served as soloist, choir director, and Music Committee member. Chester
served on the Board of Trustees, Building Committee, Finance Committee, and
other responsibilities.
Both participated in civic organizations and projects. Marjorie was a
charter member of Tuesday Evening Book Club. Chester has been city treasurer,
a school board member, president of Lions Club, a 334d degree Mason - a
member 52 years and lodge treasurer 40 years.
After marriage, Fullertons rented an apartment while their new home at
514 North Walnut was completed. While visiting friends one evening, Chester,
as a volunteer fireman, answered an alarm to a fire. It was their apartment.
Except for the clothes they wore, the newlyweds lost everything.
On May 30, 1934, they bacame parents of twins, Hugh B. and Ann. Ann with
her husband, Orville R. McCune, with thier sons, 14-year old Scott and 10-
year old Douglas, live at Benton, Kansas. Hugh and his wife Tuitti reside
in Medicine Lodge.
After their children reached adulthood, Chester and Marjorie traveled
extensively in Europe and Asia. Marjorie's death was February 16, 1973.
Chester married Laura J. Taylor in the fall of 1974. Her children are
Mrs. Barbar Harbaugh of Sharon; Mrs. Joan Myers of San Francisco; Mrs.
Gloria Myers of Los Angeles; Jerry Taylor of Lander, Wyoming; and Mrs. Sue
Gates of San Clemente, California. Laura is active in United Methodist Women,
Hope Circle, and Eastern Star.
