H. Jess Fullerton
H. Jesse Fullerton was born at Hazelton, Kansas, October 1, 1888, the
youngest child of William 'Mack' and Mary Anne (Prock) Fullerton.
The Fullterton family, eight children and parents, had moved to Kansas
from Pleasant Hope, Missouri, in 1885. It must have seemed like "coming
home" because so many of their relatives - Cowdens, Burns, Procks, and
Landreths - were all members of the Hazelton community and pioneers of
Hazelton history.
Jess had four sisters - Hattie, Lillie, Carrie, and Orpha - and four
brothers - E.B., Shirl, Floyd, and Frank. They all looked after this
latest addition to their family and probably spoiled him.
The Fullertons were Presbyterian, but since there wasn't a church of
that faith there, they attended the Methodist Church. They were zealous
workers in the church, and Uncle Mack (as he was known) would travel miles
and miles to assist in some revival being held.
In 1909, Uncle Mack and his son, Floyd, opened a general merchandise
store in Hazelton. They wer greatly respected i the twelve years that they
opereated "Fullerton and Son Merchantile."
Jess married in 1912, Letha Darby. They made their home on a farm north
of Hazelton where Jess farmed for several years. When they moved to town,
he operated the county road grader.
They were the parents of three children - Pauline, Max, and Bob.
Jess and Letha were much respected in the community, and their home was
a gathering place for old and young alike. Letha made the best "donuts",
and you were always welcomed with them and a good cup of coffee; Letha and
Jess were friends and confidants of all.
Jess died in 1951, and Letha followed him in 1954.
