John Wayne Gallaugher
John Wayne came to Barber County with his family September 6, 1936, the
eldest son of Bill and Francis Gallaugher. They moved north of Medicine Lodge
on the Swartz oil field.
John enjoyed hunting and trapping while growing up. He attended school
until he was 17, and the call to far off places beckoned, and he joined the
U.S. Merchant Marines, where he served from 1943 to 1947.
He returned to Medicine Lodge, where he met the former Bobbie Elinor Small.
They were married July 3, 1948, and moved to Russell, Kansas. Their three
children were born in Russell: Candace Elaine, William Robert, and Johnna Jane.
They lived in Russell till 1953, when they transferred to Chase, Kansas.
John, Elinor, and their children returned to Medicine Lodge in 1955, where
they lived until 1970, when they moved to Liberal, Kansas, where John continued
to work in the oil fields.
Elinor was employed by Southwestern Bell Telephone until John decided to
try his luck in the trucking business. He bought a tractor and trailor and is
now hauling everything from soup to nuts!
Candace Elaine Gallaugher (Candy), the eldest daughter of John and Elinor
was born Oct. 30, 1949, in Russell, Ks.: she moved back to Medicine Lodge in
the fall of 1955 to start school in the second grade. Candy attended school in
Medicine Lodge and graduated from High School in 1967. She attended Hutchinson
Jr. College, then moved to Wichita and worked for the First National Bank until
she moved to Liberal and worked for Peoples Bank, later Southwester Bell
Telephone. She was married to Jerrold Heathman, June 3, 1972. They have one
daughter, Holly Lynnette, born May 28, 1978. They now live in Kiowa, Ks.
William Robert (Billy Bob), second child of John and Elinor was born Nov.
20, 1950, at Russell, Ks. Billy returned to Medicine Lodge in the fall of 1955
to start school. He liked sports and participated in all sports during his
school years. He graduated from high school in May of 1970, and immediately
joined the Navy, where he spent the next nine years. He married the former
Lois Mae Hammer, July 16, 1971; they have one daughter, Melissa Marie, born
March 31, 1976.
Johnna Jane third child of John and Elinor was born August 14, 1952, at
Russell, Ks. Johnna attended school at Medicine Lodge and was always interested
in horses and spent her growing up years active in square dancing on horse-
back and Little Britches Rodeo. She attended school until 1969, when she met
Michael Gene Packard, son of Everett and Bernice Packard. They were married
May 29, 1970. To this union two children were born: William Clay, Feb. 6, 1971,
and Bobbie Michelle March 1, 1976. They now reside in Winfield, Kansas.
John and Elinor have returned to Barber County and reside in Isabel, Kansas.
John is busy going Coast to Coast not quite like "Smokey & The Bandit" while
Elinor is staying home or riding the hi-ways and by-ways with John.
