John Garner

John Riley Garner, son of Cullen and Rachel Garner, was born Jan 8, 1852,
in Lexington, Tennessee. He migrated to Boliver, Missouri, and married Mary
Magdaline Cowden, Nov., 1876, daugher of Reeves and Julia A. Cowden. Eight
children were born. They moved to Hazelton in 1900 with their six surviving
children; Lavisa, Arthur, Esther, John, Flora, and Alva. John was engaged in
farming, horse-trading, and real estate. The family grew up and relocated
elsewhere, except Arthur. He was 19 when they moved to Kansas and lived out
  his life here.
John and his wife moved to Harper about 1918 and opened a real estate
office. While on a business trip, John had a heart attack, wrecked the car,
and died near Shattuck, Oklahoma, in 1923. Mary died in 1936, and both are
  buried in Harper.
Arthur worked for his father, then purchased a store in Hazelton. He married
Nettie Catherine George, daughter of Charles and Mary Jane George, June 28,
1905. In 1906 they sold the sotre and started farming and raising cattle on
the farm Nettie's mother had homesteaded in 1883, part of which was a wedding
present from her parents. Two children were born to this union: a son, Orville
Raymond, June 13, 1907, and a daugher who died at birth in June, 1908. In 1917
they built a ready cut house. They belonged to the First Baptist Church. Nettie
died Oct. 30, 1948, and Arthur died April 14, 1953, and both are buried at
  Rose Hill Cemetery, Hazelton.
Orville met Geneva Lillard (see Lillard history) at school. Both were members
of the First Baptist Church at Hazelton and wer married in their pastor's home
May 3, 1931, and started housekeeping on the Cavanaugh farm 3 miles south of
Hazelton, where they lived for 26 years. Orville farmed rental land and the
homeplace until he died of cancer December 24, 1964. He is buried at Hazelton.
     Three children were born to this union: Cecil Dwane, born April 21, 1933;
myself, Anita Lousie, born Nov. 7, 1936; and Vanda Lhea, born Oct. 7, 1941.
Dwane was engaged in farming and raising Angus cattle until he suffered a
heart attack and died March 12, 1979. He is buried at Hazelton. (See Orville
  Garner History by Dwane).
I graduated from Kiowa High School in 1954 and married Dwaine Fox of Fairplay,
Missouri, Sept 5, 1954. We had two sons, Bradley Mitchell, born March 31, 1957,
and Curtis Michael, born August 29, 1959. Brad and wife, Teresa, live at Fort
Polk, Louisiana, where he is in the Army. They have two sons, Bradley and
Joshua. Curtis and wife, Veda, live at Vandenburg AFB, California. I am now
married to Dayton Birdwell, living in Dallas, Texas, where we are co-owners in
  Five Star Industries, Inc.
The folks built a lovely brick home and moved to Kiowa in 1957. Mother still
enjoys working in her yard and church. Daddy was a good provider, and Mother
was a good homemaker and cook. We kids always respected and loved our parents
very much and appreciate the rearing they gave us.
