Elmus & Earnie Gaunt
In 1917 Elmus Gaunt came from Dallas County, Missouri, to the home of his
mother's cousin, John R. Powell, in Medicine Lodge. His wife, Alma (Haston)
and small son, Flicton, joined him a few months later. Elmus worked at the
Skinner-Tinchner Ranch, and Alma cooked for hired help. They later moved to
the East Place, three miles east of town. Clifton rode his black pony to
Pleasant Hill and North Antelope schools. Former teachers were Opal (Bloom)
Parr, Mrs. Harris, Docia Stoops, and in Medicine Lodge, Mrs. Mercer and
Frank Stickler.
Neighbors were Tinchers, Kinkaids, Watkins, Weidners, Mrs. Morris and
Clarence. In 1927 the tornado hit a corncrib across the road, too close for
comfort!
Oil production was beginning and pipeliners came to town. About the same
time, the pavement was layed on the main streets of Medicine Lodge. Alma
opened a restaurant on South Main to feed extras in town for the projects.
Clifton was a "water-boy" for the bricklayers, earning a dollar a day. They
moved to California in 1929. Clifton finished school in Upland and Chaffee
High in Ontario, California.
Elmus' father, F.M. Gaunt, and five of Elmus' brothers also came to Barber
County. F.M. stayed only a short time, going to Harrison, Arkansas. Walter
and Florence (Mundy) with children, Clinton and Phyllis, worked at Lake City,
but moved southwest of Medicine Lodge. They lost their home and possession in
the 1927 tornado. They moved to Kiowa, then to California.

following his discharge following WWI. He worked for Best Bros. Keenes Cement.
They returned to Missouri. Geraldine (Mrs. Byron Beckner) and family live in
Wellington, Missouri. Marcelette (Mrs. Herscheline Pinkley) and her family
live in Buffalo, Missouri.
Earnie worked at Skinner's Lake City Ranch when he met Helen Stafford, step-
daughter of foreman Blaine Jones. Helen grew up in Medicine Lodge and was
educated there. She became a technician for Dr. Gilbert. She also started a
kindergarten. Earnie was interested in machinery and went to Great Bend where
he was working when he and Helen married. During WWII he did government work
at the Caterpillar Plant in Columbus, Ohio, and Helen worked at Children's
Hospital. After the war, they had the John Deere Agency and road construction
equipment in Montrose, Colorado. Earnie enjoyed fishing and hunting. He always
got his trout, elk, deer, sage hen.
After Earnie's death, Helen went to Denver, studied Audiography and worked
for Belltone until retirement. She sang for social functions and for a composer.
She recently was donor of a memorial sundial for the City of Medicine Lodge.
Charles and Alta (Figgins) came here from Montana, but during the Depression,
the three children, Ida Louise, Marion, and Donald and joined her family in
Iowa. Charles Lavern and Beverly were born there.

his life.

Diego. Another daughter, Phyllis and John Heckman, Terri and Peter live in
