Lurinda Chance Gehlen
Lurinda Lee Chance was born April 17, 1949, at Hardtner, Kansas, with Dr.
H.Y. Yasuda officiating, the oldest of five children born to Bill and Virgina
Chance.
I started school in Medicine Lodge, Ks., with Mrs. Faires as my kindergarten
teacher. I also attended school at College Hill and Pleasant Hill and back to
Medicine Lodge, where I graduated i May, 1967.
During my growing up years, we were quite active in the Roping Club. We had
showdeos and practiced for the Little Britches Rodeo, which our club sponsered
one a year. We also had a square dance on horseback which my brothers and I
were active in. Mr. Berry was our caller for some time, then later my mother,
Helen Lukens, and Otto Beagley helped with it.
On September 30, 1967, Reverend Rinn united Raphael Nicholas Gehlen and
myself in marriage. The ceremony took place in the First Presbyterian Church
in Medicine Lodge, Kansas, of which I was a member.
Raphael Nicholas Gehlen was born July 12, 1945, at St. Leo, Kansas, the
fifth child born to Charles and Helen Gehlen. In 1951, his fmaily moved from
St. Leo to Sharon, Kansas. He went to St. Boniface School and Sharon High
School where he graduated in May, 1965.
After our marriage, we lived in Kiowa for awhile, then moved to Anthony,
Valley Center, Newton, and Leehigh, Kansas. We moved back to Sharon, Kansas
in 1975.
Our first child, Marsha Anne, was born May 3, 1969, at Medicine Lodge
Memorial Hospital; our second daughter was born on February 2, 1973, at
Newton, Kansas, we named her Nicole Andrea; our son, Raphael Anthony (Tony),
was born April 16, 1975 at Newton, Kansas.
We live on a small acreage south and east of Sharon, Ks. Ray is a driller
for Union Drig. Co. Our two girls are in school in the Sharon school system.
