Charles George
Charles George, son of Kellog and Nettie George, was born in Germany in
1852 and came to America with his parents and brother, Will, in 1855. They
migrated west settling near Leavenworth, Kansas. As a young man he went to
Texas and worked on the range herding cattle and experienced the pioneer
days. In 1883 he took a homestead northeast of Hazelton and married another
homesteader, a widow, Mary Jane Speer.
Mary Jane, daughter of Margaret (Walton) and Lemuel Coulter, ws born in
Livonia, Indiana, in 1849 and married Leaf Speer and had three children: Bell,
Orben, and Minnie. Mr. Speer died in 1881 at Olathe, Kansas. Mrs. Speer and
her children migrated to Barber County and took a homestead northeast of
Hazelton, and she married Charles George in March, 1884. Four daughters were
born on the homestead of their mother; Nettie Catherine, twins - Ada May and
Ida Lee, and Ethel Leona.
Charles prospered and bought more land and built a new big home one mile
east of Mary's homestead, part of which they gave to Nettie as a wedding gift
when she married Arthur Garner (see Garner history) in 1905. The Garners
bought the remainder of the quarter and moved onto the homestead in 1906. To
this union were born two children: Orville in 1907, and a daughter who died
at birth. Orville married geneva Lillard (see Lillard history) in 1931, and
they had three children: Dwane, Anita, and Vanda. Nettie died in 1948. Arthur
in 1953, Orville in 1964, and all are buried in the Rose Hill Cemetery at
Hazelton.
Ida married Harry Bonham and had eight children: Chester, Lester, Leland,
Mary Evelyn (Martin), Imogene (McDaniels), Richard, Dorothy Mae, and Lavina
Lee (Walk). Ida died in 1957, and Harry in 1968.
Ethel Leona married Leslie Buckles and had two sons: Hilbert, who married
Mildred Kruckenberg; and Hubert, who married Margaret Gallup, and they had
one son, Craig. Leslie died in 1971. Ona is 88 years old, still lives in her
own home in Kiowa, cares for herself, and enjoys playing the piano.
Ada ;married Russell Reeves for a short duration. She raised her sister's
daughter, Lorena, who married Herman Reeves, and they had four children:
Francis, Patricia, Linda, and Larry.
Mary Jane died in 1921, and Charles and daughter, Ada, lived on in his
home which he left her at his death in 1937. Ada died in 1969 and is buried
at Hazelton near her parents. The farm was then sold, and the old house torn
down; thus went another landmark into oblivion.
Today, I, Vanda Garner Domnick (Mrs. Floyd Domnick, Jr.), live on the
homestead of my Great Grandmother, Mary Jane George, where we established the
Hiltop Nursery and Landscape Service in 1973. I remember my grandparents well,
even tho I was only 7 when Grandmother died. I will always remember the aroma
of their home because it was so clean and smelled of home baked foods. I
consider it a great honor to live in Grandmother's house and am proud of my
heritage.
