Don Gerstner
Don Gerstner was born in Woods County, Oklahoma, and moved to Medicine
Lodge with his parents, Royce and Leone Gerstner, at about three years of
age. He attended Medicine Lodge schools; and after graduating from high
school, he attended Kansas State University for two years, majoring in
physical education and participating on the wrestling team. During this
time, he met and married Carol Wilson from Pratt, Kansas.
Carol was born in Reno County, Kansas. She moved to Pratt at age four
with her parents, Earl and Sylvia Wilson, and an older brother and sister.
She attended Pratt schools for twelve years with the exception of three
short intervals when she attended high schools in Los Angeles, California,
and Conway Springs, Kansas.
Upon graduating from Pratt High School, Carol worked for a year for Bell
Telephone Company at Pratt. Don, upon completing his second year of college,
was drafted in the Army. He was sent to basic training in Fort Riley, Kansas.
He served with the third infantry division in the heavy motor company in
Korea for fourteen months and served in the Army twenty-one months. Don
then rejoined his wife, who was residing in Medicine Lodge.
Don became the Hutchinson News and Wichita Eagle distributor. He also
managed the city swimming pool for three years.
Three children were born to Carol and Don, the eldest, a daughter Gwendolee
in '51, Lisa in '55, and a son Kyle in '56. Don started in the carpentry
business in 1960, and in '62 the family moved to a small farm three miles
south of Medicine Lodge.
Here Don added another occupation to his list, that of training and raising
bird dogs for customers from Oklahoma, Texas, Missouri, and Kansas. He was
fortunate enough to have trained the only bird dog to have ever won the
national shooting dog championship two years consecutively, an English pointer
named Easy Mark. At his writing, Don is still in the newspaper, contracting,
and bird dog training business.
Don and Carol have completely remodeled and restored their farm house which
was originally built sometime in the late 1800's. The house was originally a
dugout, and later owners had built on the rooms above ground.
The children all graduated from Medicine Lodge High School. Gwendolee
graduated from Pratt Junior College and married Roy Luttrell of Sawyer, Kansas.
They have one daughter, Christi, and are soon expecting another child. They
live in Tyro, Kansas, and Gwendolee works for Funk Manufacturing Company in
Coffeyville as a purchasing agent.
Lisa graduated from Kansas State University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts
Degree. She married Steve Shute from Red Cloud, Nebraska. They now reside in
Houston, Texas, where Lisa is a foreman for a large house painting company.
Kyle attended Fort Hays State for one year and was on the varsity gymnastics
team. He now lives in Pratt, Kansas, and is in the construction business with
his father.
