Maurice Ghere
Maurice Ghere and Mildred Mitchell were united in marriage August 15, 1925
at Harper, Kansas. He was born February 21, 1904 at Harper, Kansas. Morey was
one of the four children of George and Lulu Lowden Ghere. Mildred, daughter of
Charles and Nancy Proffitt Mitchell, was born August 12, 1907. Mildred was
one of nine children.
Morey worked for Isenhower Cleaners and Mildred worked for Primms Depart-
ment Store until they had $600 in their savings which prompted them to move
west and seek their fortune.
They established the Spic and Span Cleaning Shop in Medicine Lodge February
18, 1928.
So now that the west has been won,
And God didn't see fit to give us a son
To carry on the name of Ghere
We've never bee sorry that we moved there.
So while other fold was a leanin'
The Ghere was takin' the town to a cleanin'.
They were devoted to their work and to each other and worked side by side
for 47 years.
On December 13, 1945, a baby girl blessed their home. She answered to the
name of Sondra Kay. Sonnie went through high school in Medicine Lodge and
graduated in 1963 after which she attended an IBM trade school in Wichita,
Kansas.
In 1964 Sonnie was married to Larry DeWeese, son of Edna and Orland DeWeese.
To this union two precious children were born. Thomasin Lynn (Tommye), born
March 25, 1967, and Thad Michael, born September 10, 1971. Sonnie, Larry and
children live in Pueblo, Colorado. Sonnie is a dental technician and Larry an
electrical salesman.
In 1973 Morey suffered a massive heart attack and underwent open heart
surgery.
In 1975 Morey and Mildred celebrated their golden wedding anniversary with
open house hosted by their children from Pueblo, Colorado.
On January 21, 1977, Morey passed this life, and the cleaning shop closed
after 47 years in Medicine Lodge.
Morey and Mildred have been members of the Medicine Lodge Church of Christ
which they helped to establish here.
They have been devoted to Medicine Lodge and their many friends through the
years. Mildred retained her home in which she had lived since 1945.
Two of Mildred's family have also made Medicine Lodge their home, a brother
Floyd Mitchell and wife Nellie (Dowdy) have been residents since 1942. They
operated Phillips 66 Service Station from 1943-1952. They built the Phillips
Station on west 160 and leased it to Virgil Bryan. Floyed passed away September
14, 1976. Dale Irons Parr and daughter Imogene Irons Trice have been local
residents since 1936. Dale's husband All Parr is deceased and Dale is living
in Pratt.
