Leslie B. Gibson

Leslie B. Gibson came from Linn County, Missouri, in 1896 at age four. The
family wanted good grass for Hereford cattle and rich soil for farming. Leslie
Bryan (named after William Cullen Bryant), born 22 April 1892, married 9 Dec.
1915, to Tracie M. Kumberg, born 3 August 1892. She came from Morgan County,
Missouri, at age 5. She taught school in the county rural school system before
their marriage. He attended business college in Wichita.
They moved into a converted four room school house four miles west of Isabel,
where they raised cattle and farmed.
Dad and the neighbors enjoyed coyote hunting with their greyhounds. They
built fish ponds and liked to fish.
Mother was an excellent cook. She was known for her angel food cakes and
raised bread. She had a large garden and canned many quarts of vegetables,
made quilts, and sewed. If a neighbor needed her, she was there to help.
We were not rich with earthly possessions, but we didn't know we were not
rich, because we didn't know we were poor.
The school bus took us to Isabel each day. In the evening we smelled the
heavy odor of fresh bread as we slammed the bus door.
Basketball games helped make winter short. Baseball and horseback riding
  were fun in the summer.
Sometimes winter storms would get in the way of basketball, and we would
habe to leave the old Hudson in a snow drift and wal a quarter of a mile.
One year the bus got to our place, and we had seventeen guests for two nights
and three days. The children had fun!! Mother and the high school girl had
to prepare food for us. We had home butchered meat, eggs, fresh bread, canned
vegetables, cake, fudge, and pop corn. There was milk for all.
Our home was on a hill. We enjoyed the view. The sunset were beautiful.
Storms could be seen coming. Tornadoes leveled buildings but we were always
safe in the cellar. We often had to dry out chickens, little calves, or thaw
the water hose behind the wood stove.
Leslie was active in the Masonic Lodge. He was township clerk for many
years. Tracie took part in Eastern Star and was secretary a few years.
Leslie died in Pratt 9 August 1973. Tracie is in the Villa Manor at Pratt.
