Benjamin Glasier
Benjamin Glasier came to Medicine Lodge in the 1890's. He married Jennie
Currie, a daughter of Charley Currie, pioneer farmer and well-known rancher
in this area. Benjamin had a general store here, located next to Hibbard's
Rexall Drug Store on North Main Street. Later he sold out and moved to
Kansas City, Missouri where he was engaged in real estate.
After fourteen years, Ben returned to Medicine Lodge with his family
and moved to the Currie Ranch northof town. He stayed tehre for two years,
and Jennie,his wife, became ill. They lfet the farm in 1916 to go to New
Mexico for his wife's health. They moved back to Medicine Lodge where she
died in 1917.
Ben and Jennie had two children while living in Medicine Lodge. Fay,
born November 8, 1895, and Roy, born August 15, 1900. Fay and Roy attended
school in Kansas City. When Roy was seventeen, he joined the Marines in
World War I and served overseas. He returned in 1919. Roy worked on a ranch
for Rink McCullough for a time; then moved to Colorado Springs where he met
and married a local girl, Grace Sonneckson. They celebrated their 50th
wedding anniversary several years ago.
Fay married Allan Hibbard of Medicine Lodge. They have two daughters -
Helen Inis and Mary Jean. They grew up and graduated from the Medicine Lodge
schools. Helen and Jean attended Stephens College in Missouri, and Helen
went on to Wichita State University where she received her degree. Jean also
attended Fort Hays State College.
Helen married Glenn Shriver, a local farm boy. They were married prior to
World War II, and Glenn served in the Air Force in the Pacific area. He
received his degree from Kansas State University. After the war, he was
County Agent for several years, then went into the banking business at Pratt
and Coats, Kansas. They had three children - 2 daughters and a son. Helen
died in 1960.
L.H. (Dub) Rickard married Mary Jean in 1945. He had attended Fort Hays
State for 2 years prior to World War II; then was in the Army for 42 months,
serving in the European Area with an evacuation hospital unit. He is a
partner in Hibbard's Rexall Drug Store. They have 2 girls - both married
with families.
Allan and Fay have always been active in St. Mark's Episcopal Church. Fay
has many interests and is a charter member of PEO, charter member of American
Legion Auxiliary, charter member of Mother's Club, and a member of Eastern
Star.
In the days before television Fay and Allan and other couples had to make
their own entertainment. They spent many evenings rolling back the rug at
their home and having dances to the music of the Edison Phonograph. They
would also go to Isable to Tilton's Barn for dances. Later in the 1940's
they began square dancing and belonged to 4 square dance clubs for many years.
