Franklin Gordon


     Franklin E. Gordon, son of Frank and Myrtle (Riggins) Gordon, was born
  April 26, 1918, in Medicine Lodge. He had two older brothers, Charlie (d.
  1968) and Floyd of Carlsbad, New Mexico.
     Active i school activities, Boy Scouts, and summer baseball, Franklin
  attended the local schools, graduating in 1937. He attended Washburn
  University, Topeka.
     August 17, 1941, he married Hazel Arline Frame at the country home of 
  her parents, Clarence and Grace Frame, near Sawyer, Kansas.
     Hazel, her sisters Florence and Ethel, and a brother, Glenn (d. 1922),
  attended Elm Mills School, one of the largest Barber County rural schools.
  Hazel has fond memories of three young teachers, Blanche Hemmer Jennings,
  Margaret Smith Pound, and louise Bloom Vanderwork. After Sawyer High School
  graduation, Hazel completed secretarial practice and bookkeeping courses.
     She has been employed in secretarial work, serving as receptionist when
  Medicine Lodge Hospital opened, employed in First National Bank's bookkeeping
  department, bookkeeping for Barber County Index, and presently employed as
  Barber County Conservation District Secretary.
     Franklin and Hazel lived in Medicine Lodge until December 1941, when he
  was drafted in World War II. After his discharge they returned to Medicine
  Lodge.
     They became members of the American Legion and Auxiliary; he was also
  Commander of Post #69. He served as president of Young Democrats of Barber
  County and as Democratic Committee Chairman. He served as Acting Postmaster
  1 1/2 years. He is a Mason and a member of Delta Lodge #77.
     From 1955 until retirement in 1975, he was district representative for a
  life insurance company. A charter member of the Leisure Center, he serves
  as secretary.
     Franklin and Hazel are the proud parents of four children: twin daughters
  Karen and Arlen Kay (d. 1942), Robin Lynn, and Cherly Jean. They shared a
  home filled with love and concern for each other and for others. They are
  forever grateful that wonderful friends and relatives have cared in times
  of illness.
     Karen (b. July 12, 1942, at Pratt, Kansas) was active in school activities
  and graduated from Medicine Lodge High in 1960. She attended Professional
  Beauty SChool, Wichita, receiving her cosmetology license. She pursued this
  career in Wichita until May 13, 1967, when she married Kenneth J. Mantz, son
  of Dell and Ida Mantz of Mulvane, Kansas. Returning from overseas duty in
  the Viet Nam War, Kenneth worked for Beech Aircraft Company, Wichita. He is
  now district representative for a life insurance firm. They reside in their
  lovely lakeside home near Milford, Kansas.
     Robin (b. February 22, 1946, at Hardtner, Kansas) enlisted with the U.S.
  Marine Corps after his 1965 Medicine Lodge High graduation. He and his 
  batallion were in heavy fighting in Viet Nam; in the course of battle he was
  wounded by enemy mortor fire - later awarded the Purple Heart and other
  medals for valor and courage. After discharge in 1969, he was employed by
  Kansas Law Enforcement Department. Upon graduation from the Police Academy,
  he was assigned police duty at the Kansas State Capitol, later transfered
  to the Wichita State University Police, he enrolled in many criminology
  course and seminars which greatly enhanced his law enforcement career.
     Cheryl (b. Fev 22, 1954, at Medicine Lodge), graduated from Medicine Lodge
  High in 1972; she graduated from Sidney School of Cosmetology, Hutchinson,
  in 1973. A licensed beauticiain, she was a hairdresser at Village Salon,
  Medicine Lodge for five years; November 25, 1978, she married Richard S.
  Standage of Lake Odessa, Michigan. Cherly and Richard reside in Porterville,
  California. He is a biologist of fisheries for Sequoia National Forest
  Service; she, a licensed beautician.
