Leroy Graves


     John LeRoy Graves, third son of George Luther and Julia Effie (Hill)
  Graves, was born at the Graves homestead near Hardtner, Kansas, Oct. 9,
  1890, and passed away at the Achenback Memorial Hospital after a short
  illness, December 10, 1958.
     Roy, as he was called, received his early education at Crown Center
  in Barber County, Kansas, near Graves homestead and was a graduate of
  Northwestern State Normal College at Alva, Oklahoma in 1914.
     During his life, he taught many terms of school. His handwriting was
  beautiful, and he taught penmanship in the country schools. Roy also
  taught in the Hawkins Country School, Barber County, Kansas, in Waynoka,
  Goltry, and Guyman, Oklahoma, Public Schools.
     Roy served his country in World War I, receiving his honorable discharge
  January 23, 1919.
     Roy was a member of the Masonic Lodge, American Legion Post #175 of
  Hardtner, Kansas, of which he was a Past Commander, and the Hardtner 
  Methodist Church.
     On November 11, 1919, Roy ws united in marriage to Luella DeMott of
  Cherokee, Oklahoma, at Wichita, Kansas.
     Luella DeMott, daughter of Abraham and Armintie L. DeMott, was born
  November 2, 1891, on a farm near Sharon, Kansas, and departed this life
  September 21, 1975, at the Kiowa District Hospital at the age of 83 years.
     Ella, as she frequently ws called, spent many years as a telephone
  operator at Cherokee, Oklahoma, before her marriage. Most of her lifetime
  was spent in Sharon and Hardtner, Kansas, and Cherokee, and Alva, Oklahoma,
  areas.
     Ella came from pioneer stock. Her father, Abraham DeMott, in 1861 enlisted
  as a private in Company B, 59th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. Mr DeMott served
  the entire course of the Civil War and received his discharge July 17, 1865.
     Ella was a member of the Hardtner United Methodist Church, United Methodist
  Women, American Legion Auxilliary, and sustaining member of the YWCA.
     John LeRoy and Luella were blessed with twins on January 30, 1925, at the
  Wichita Hospital. Their names were John LeRoy Graves Jr., and Jean Lorraine
  Graves.
     The twins have married. John married Mary Ann Sullivan of Lawton, Oklahoma.
  To this union are four children: Suzette Graves; John Paul Graves, (Kristine
  Graves); Mrs. Julie Phillips, (David Phillips); Jody Ray Graves.
     Jean married Richard Vogel and to this union four children: Richard LeRoy
  Vogel (Susan Kay Schubert-Vogel); Barbara Jean Sneary (Ron Sneary); Mary
  Elaine Hill (Ronald Gene Hill); Albert Jay Vogel.
     There are seven great-grandchildren: Jenney and Paul Thomas Graves; Eric
  Steven, Lindsey Kay and Mattew Richard Vogel; Caleb Jerome Sneary and Jed
  Madison Hill.
