William C. Graves

William C. Graves was born Jan. 18, 1888, in Raton, New Mexico. He, together
with his family, moved to Barber County, Kansas, where his father, George L.
Graves, Sr., had homesteaded 160 acres of land near Hardtner, Kansas.
When the children had finished their elementary education in country school
near them, his father moved the family to Alva. The oldest son, Geor. L. Jr.,
was married by that time and lived on the home place until his folks were
ready to move back in 1916.
While in Alva, William C. studied piano at what is now Northwestern, Okla.
State University. Later he went to Oklahoma City, where he graduated from Hills
Business College. Upon his return to Alva he was employed by the First National
Bank. While there he bacame ill and had to spend two years in Colorado. He
returned to Alva, resumed working in the bank, and advanced to assistant cashier.
I was born in Lawrence, Nebraska, May 31, 1898, and came to this part of the
country when I was two years old. My father, Henry Schumm, was a farmer and
farmed around Burlington, Oklahoma, in 1910 where I attended school. Later we
moved north of Alva, Oklahoma. I finished my schooling. I was the youngest of
nine children all of whom are now deceased. Some died in infancy in Nebraska.
Most of my family finally moved to Clinton, Oklahoma, where they resided until
their death. At that time I still had one brother and two sisters living. The
oldest one was married and lived in Alva.
I worked in a doctor's office and also served as secretary for WWI Local
Draft Board. I was going to be married soon to William C.; therefore, one sister
  and I stayed in Alva.
We were married October 7, 1917, when we moved to Hardtner where my husband
(Bill) became cashier of the Hardtner State Bank for eight years. His health
was failing and he needed to be outside. He accepted a position inspecting
livestock loans for The Federal Intermediate Credit of Kansas and the northern
part of Oklahoma. He worked at this until he could no longer get around as he
was fast becoming a cripple from arthritis. He suffered from this for over
twenty-five years, until his death in 1957.
Two sons were born: Robert E. (Bob), born in 1930, and William Joseph (Joe),
  born in 1935.
Bob is a 1948 graduate of Hardtner High School and was married to Patricia
(Pat) Jones in 1953 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Alva, Oklahoma. They
have eight children. Bob farms 1275 acres and lives on the home place where I
also live in a mobile home in his yard.
Joe is a 1953 graduate of Kiowa High School because Hardtner had no band
program at the time. He was married to Mary Nell Neagle of Mutual, Oklahoma,
in 1968 at Winfield, Kansas, where she was teaching vocal music. They have two
children, Natalie Sue and Charisse Marie. They live in Hutchinson, Kansas. Joe
has been a band director in the Buhler School System for the past twelve years.
Previous to that he taught at Preston, Partridge, and Ulysses, Kansas. Both he
and his wife are 1957 graduates of NWOSU at Alva and from Wichita State University,
where they received their M.A. Degrees in music.
