Milton Marcelles Greever

M.M. Greever was born in Johnson County, Tennessee, in 1857 and came to Kiowa,
Barber County, in 1871. Matilda Jane Sterling came to Hardtner from Sullivan
County, Missouri, with her family about 1880.
Father and Mother were married in 1894, and moved to Capron, Oklahoma, where
Father had a homestead. Two children, Emma and Belle, were born there. Father
sold and moved to a ranch at Aetna, Kansas, in 1897, where two children were
born: Allie and Bertha. After two very severe winters and a high loss of cattle,
they moved the family in 1903 to Medicine Lodge, where they resided until their
deaths in 1942 and 1943. They were buried in Highland Cemetery.
My sister Jennis (1904) and I (1909) were born at Medicine Lodge. All the
children attended school at Medicine Lodge. We always had a large garden, fruit
trees, grape arbor, and we canned most of our foods. We had milk cows and chickens
and our own meat. We each had chores assigned to us, and we completed them. I
remember that each had jobs away form home, and we earned our own spending money.
We were not a family of wealth, but I have many pleasant thoughts of our family
life together. We raised pop corn which we popped, and peanuts which we roasted.
We had taffy pulls, and we also had an organ which we played for family singing.
I moved to Hutchinson, Kansas, in 1923 and had several interesting jobs. I was
married to Leola Cole in 1928. To his union were born two sons and one daughter.
In 1936 we opened an Office Machines Business. This grew into three stores, one
in Hutchinson, Great Bend, and McPherson, which we operated until 1974 at which
time they were disposed of, and my wife and I retired to our farm near Hutchinson.
We raised cattle, wheat, and alfalfa. We are active in our church, Masonic Lodge,
and Eastern Star. We have nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren. I have
enjoyed my life and have many fond memories of the people of Medicine Lodge and
  Barber County.
All of my sisters and husbands lived at one time in Medicine Lodge. A half
sister, Minnie Minnich, married Charles Tyrell, Emma married Jack Forsyth and
lived at Haswall, Colorado. Belle married Clarence McGee and lived in later years
in Oklahoma and California. Allie and husband Jack Jernigan lived in Colorado.
Jennie and Robert Mader lived in Wichita. Sister Bertha and her husband, Ernest
Riggins, still reside in Medicine Lodge.
