Charlie Griem
Charlie and Edna Griem were married at her parents home in Kingman County,
June 14, 1911. They farmed until 1929 when they moved to Medicien Lodge with
four daughters. Later that year their only son was born.
Charlie was the oldest child of Fred and Dora Bartel Griem. Edna was the
second of Wendell and Susan Cook Willits. And Charlie wasn't named Charles.
His name was Carl Frederick but his Mother told the teacher when she took
him to school his name was "Charlie" and the name stuck. His family even
called him Charlie.
He held various jobs in Medicine Lodge during the '30's, as did many
others, but finally got on at the Ice Plant when Roland Dawson owned it. He
stayed there until about his 70th birthday when he had to retire.
They had a great time with family gatherings and no occasion was needed
for all to gather at Mom and Dads. We sometimes wonder now how they put up
with all of us at once! But the habit was cathcing and though they are gone,
we still have family gatherings. Christmas Eve is one of our special times
and we always have a crowd. You should try sometime stuffing 45 people in
a 12X60 mobil home, feed them and have a gift exchange! We did it and had
a grand time. The folks always said there was room for one more and it's
true.
They had five children, Alverda Shoults lives in the plaza Apts.,
Florence Simon lives in Mulvane, Doris and Gussie married brothers, Norman
and Grant Long. Dors and Norman live here and are retired. Gussie and
Grant have a business here and have a short way to go to retirement. Lewis
and his wife, Betty Jo (Smith) live in Pratt and run a convenience store.
Alverda has four children, Florence four living (they lost 2 sons), Doris
had four and lost a son in Viet Nam in 1968. Gussie had no children and
Lewis had three.
Dad died in Sept. 1961 and Mom lived 13 years after. She traveled and
visited a lot in that time and went where she was needed. She died in Sept
1974. Both are buried in Nichols Cemetery at Zenda, near where they were
born.
