Fredrick Griem
Fred's father, Rennig Fredrick Griem, was born in Germany and died at the
age of 97; his mother, Anna Dorothea, was born in 1863 in Germany and died
at the age of 59. They were married in 1882 and came to Kansas in 1877, when
he was 17 years old. In 1893 they moved to the old Fritz farm two miles north
of Zenda. To this union were born Charles F. who married Edna Willets (also
a native of Kansas); Lenna, who married Frank Rall, a banker at Zenda; Sopha,
who married Dave McVicker; Rennie, who married Grace Boswell, a native of
Kansas; Fred, who married Bertha O. Lee of Drummond, Oklahoma. Grace and
Bertha are the only two left from that generation.
Fred married Bertha in July 1926. They moved to a farm that belonged to
George McNab, 7 miles north of Sharon, living there until 1927. When the
tornado struck Medicine Lodge, Fred was in his car south of Celista. His car
was hit; it rolled over five times, injuring his back and neck from which
he never completely recovered.
He became a welder by trade, working in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas, and
moved many places to follow the oil field work. They adopted a son, Herman
Fredrick, in 1930, who married Georgia Routon of Leoti. He served in the
Army went overseas, and when he returned, he was on a farm southeast of Leoti.
He soon became a TV repairman and worked for Rinke's TV center in Medicine
Lodge for a while. He now lives in Loeti and has ten children, five of whom
are still at home. Of the five boys and five girls, one daughter was killed
in a car wreck at the age of fourteen.
In 1938 Fred and Bertha adopted a daughter, Delena Lee. She graduated from
Tribune, Kansas, High School after which they moved to Medicine Lodge and
bought their home on South Cherry Street. Delena met Stanley McCullough and
they were married in 1962. She worked at Building and Loan and for Art Slamal.
They lived in Medicine Lodge on a farm until a few years ago, moving to
Houghton, Kansas, later to Colorado. They have two adopted children, Julie
and Terri. Dee now works at The Valley State Bank in Lamar, Colorado.
After Fred's death in 1970, Bertha remained in their home on Cherry Street
until 1978 when she moved to the Indian Hills Plaza, where she loves it.
Bertha's father, Edward H. Lee was born in Illinois and died at 84 in
Oklahoma. Her mother, Rosetta, was born at Udall, Kansas and died at 82 years
in Oklahoma. Her father made the run from South Line and staked a claim 5
miles east of Ames, Oklahoma, where she was born. One of her two brothers
died at birth, the other, Marvin Lee, and his wife, Mary, live in Medicine
Lodge.
Both the Griem and Lee families were active church members. The Griem
family were mostly Lutherans and the Lee family of differnet denominations.
Bertha belongs to the Methodist Church here in Medicine Lodge.
