Richard Guthrie
In 1921 Richard Guthrie, his mother, and grandparents, three brothers, and
a sister moved to Wichita from the Texas Panhandle, when he was 9 years old.
Life in Texas had become somewhat of a hardship as crops were short at the
time just after World War I. His mother found employement in Wichita and
during this time Richard sold the Wichita Beacon Newspaper evenings after
school. It so happened that the Beacon published their first colored comic
strip at this time. Daily papers sold for 3 cents a copy and the Sunday
paper was 5 cents. He often went to the Marple Theater after selling papers,
and the admission was 6 cents.
For a short time the children were placed in the Wichita Childrens Home.
Later when Richard was 11 and his brother, Max, was 6, they were fortunate
to be taken into the home of Mr. and Mrs. Pete Farney, south and east of
Kiowa, where they assisted with farming and care of livestock. To supplement
their income during depression years, they often delivered produce to homes
in Kiowa. They were educated in the Kiowa schools. Richard graduated in 1931.
In 1933 Richard accompanied friends to the World's Fair in Chicago, Ill.;
they spent time in the corn harvest at Morton, Ill. While there, he met his
wife, Florence Schock; and they were later married in Peoria, Ill. in 1936.
They made their home one mile south of Kiowa for 15 years, then Richard built
a home in Kiowa, doing most of the work himself. They moved into it in 1951.
They have always been engaged in farming. In 1961 Richard received a Barber
County Soil Conservation Award. From the spring of 1945 through 1948 Richard
was in partnership with Max in the Oklahoma Tire and Supply Store in Kiowa.
Several years later he spent several winters working with Harley Meyer Const.
Co. Richard enjoys woodworking as a hobby in his spare time.
Mr. and Mrs. Guthrie have five daughters, all graduated from Kiowa High
School, and continued their education in Kansas colleges. Lois (Mrs. Ronald
Allenback) of Kiowa and Geneva (Mrs. Gerald Sullivan) of Morton, Ill.,
completed Business College courses in Wichita, Kansas. Mary (Mrs. Ernest
Weigele) of Livonia, Michigan, and Susan of Hays, Kansas, graduated from KSU
at Manhattan, Kansas. Ann (Mrs. Martin Thenhaus) of Tucson, Arizona, graduated
from Emporia State Teachers College, Emporia, Kansas.
